Dragonmarks

Dragonmark Basics

The physical manifestations of the Draconic Prophecy , these marks have appeared on at least seven of the common races of Khorvaire They are not birthmarks although they are passed through family lines. Dragonmarks are similar in appearance to a tattoo but far more distinct.

Dragonmark Manifestation

Typically a mark will appear during the bearer's adolescence but this is not always true. There are three separate manifestations or tiers of each mark that correlate in size, detail and capability. When a mark gains power it will increase in size and intricacy. A bearer might increase the power of their Dragonmark through study and focus, life experience or even through traumatic or life-alerting events. While most bearers will initially manifest with the least mark it is possible to manifest a lesser or greater mark without explanation. Most members of a Dragonmarked House will have the least or lesser marks.

Aberrant Dragonmarks

Dragonmarks are passed through family lines, they are reliable and predictable. They create, heal and protect. Aberrant Dragonmarks on the other hand are unpredictable. They might be as much danger to their bearer as to those around them making them a source of fear to most members of society. No two aberrant marks are alike but they are easily distinguished from regular marks by their chaotic, often asymmetric forms.

Originally the bearers of aberrant marks were shuned by the Dragonmarked Houses and were left to eke out an existance on the edge of society. In more recent times bearers of these aberrant marks have begun to unite and have formed House Tarkanan .

Dragonmarks and Social Standing

Bearers of a Dragonmark, even the least Dragonmark, enjoy a certian level of social status regardless of their other circumstances. Those recently manifesting a mark may find that new social opportuities, better employment or higher rank in their houses is suddenly avalible to them.
