The Frostbreath Highlands

Geography

The rolling hills of the Frostbreath Highlands roughly make up the northernmost third of Edune. The highland is separated from the rest of the continent by the Greybank River. The land is covered in a thick layer of snow in ice almost year-round.   Over time, a small lake has formed in the dips between the hills. Due to thermal activity, this lake stays unfrozen year-round. The lake's temperature usually varies between 15 °C and 20°C depending on the season and the weather.   There are a few small outposts located in the highland but no bigger towns or cities. The outposts are mostly used by hunters and, in the summer, by farmers.

Ecosystem Cycles

The winters are particularly long and harsh in this region. The snow typically thaws during the months of summer, Sunrose, Brightstar, and Redfall. On rare occasions, the ice and snow cover the land for the whole year, only melting slightly.   As the soil of the highland is extremely fertile, farmers use the summer months to plant quickly growing plants in the flatter areas. They mostly plant peas, radish, and lettuce which are ready for harvest after just one to two months.

Localized Phenomena

This area of Edune is prone to blizzards, especially during the winter months. Even in the summer months, those traversing the highland should be prepared for snowfall.

Fauna & Flora

Flora

Few plants can survive the harsh weather of the Frostbreath Highlands. Only some winterberry bushes and fir trees dot the otherwise barren landscape.

Fauna

Due to the limited resources, it is mostly snow foxes, polar bears, and wolves who inhabit the highland. Additionally, there are the fish who live in the lake. Although they mostly stick to the northernmost part of the Highlands, especially during the summer, a few Yetis and Remorhaz roam this part of the land.   There also are rumors that a White Dragon has made its home in these snowy hills, but there have been no confirmed sightings.

Natural Resources

Snow and melting ice can provide travelers with a steady source of drinking water. It should be noted, however, that waterskins are not exempt from freezing temperatures. Those who do not have traveling companions with magical capabilities often fill their waterskins with potent alcohol.    While the water from the lake does not freeze, it should not be consumed without prior purification. The lake does, however, provide a source of fish.   The most important resource from this region comes from the polar bears and foxes living there. Polar bears provide ample fur for warm winter coats and plenty of meat. The crystal white fur of snow foxes is coveted by many a nobleman as a status symbol.
