Sandglider

Description

Sandgliders are used to traverse vast desert expanses. They are fairly simple and lightweight constructions, allowing them to be repaired on the fly - or to be dragged if necessary. Like small ships made for travelling on sand, they are made out of wood and equipped with a small mast and boom, sporting a sailcloth.   The underside of Sandgliders resembles the keel of a ship, if not quite as deep. This makes the Sandgliders less top-heavy and thus less likely to keel over. It also helps to keep the momentum going.

Other uses

The sailcloth can easily be detached from the upper part of the mast while still being attached to the boom. Due to this, Riders will only have to find a single anchor-point they can attach the sailcloth to. This way, they can easily and quickly create some shade in the blaring heat of the desert sun, if needed. As the sailcloth is very durable, it can also provide shelter from the elements to a certain extent - or even serve as a blanket during the typically freezing nights.

Propulsion

Sandgliders rely solely on wind currents for propulsion. Experienced Riders can use the wind currents and the momentum of going down dunes to navigate the desert without ever having to stop. Sometimes this means taking small detours, but it is still faster than travelling on foot or camelback.   It is possible, albeit uncommon, for mages to use their spells to help propel the Sandglider, allowing for even faster travel.

Weapons & Armament

Due to their lightweight construction, Sandgliders are not equipped with any weapons or defences beyond what the Riders carry.
