Nara

The trees slowly thin and the path opens up onto a quiet bay side town. The people there are friendly as they greet one another on their way to their morning tasks. Boats are already leaving the dock to locate the fish, some catching the wind in the sails, a few utilizing metal blocks strapped to their wooden canoes to propel themselves forward. The townsfolk seem hesitant as you approach, but they greet you with a smile nonetheless. You were told Nara would be a pleasant place to stay on your journey north, and so far you're not disappointed.

Demographics

Nara consists mostly of humans living in the town proper. The population of humans is pretty evenly split between male and female. Most of the humans are between the ages of 16-35, with about 15% falling above that range, and another 10% falling below.   There is a single family of dwarves that live in the town, and they act as the town tinkerers/repairers. There are 7 of them, and the family structure is not clear to any one outside of the dwarves.   A few catfolk live nearby the town. Estimates are anywhere from 5 to 20, but no one has ever gotten an accurate count. They come into town and trade either coin or old working tech for, mostly, fish.   A single male ageless lives to the south of town, about half a day's walk. He never comes into the town, but the people will sometimes make short pilgrimages to him, bringing him food, supplies, or offers to repair his homes. It's said that he's lived there for generations, never aging. If the people of Nara are unable to resolve a conflict they will often seek his council.

Government

A council of 5 elders dictates policy for the town. They also settle any disputes between citizens. If they cannot resolve a dispute, they take it to the Wise One that lives just south of town.   Every few years a tax collector from The Capital, Hebi, will arrive. The citizens of Nara trust that the taxes they pay go to the protection of their lands and the appeasement of the Great Serpent.

Defences

Narajin have never felt the need to defend their town. They occasionally see small groups of troops pass through, or a imperial ship patrolling the waters.

Industry & Trade

Nara's main assets are her fishing boats. The majority of citizens in Nara work the sea to bring in fish, and those who don't are more likely than not processing the day's catch at the docks. Their diet is primarily fish, but they catch enough to trade with neighboring villages inland for rice, soy, and other produce.

Geography

Nara is on one of the northern Hebi islands, nestled in a quiet bay on the eastern end of the island. On a clear day the mainland is just barely visible on the horizon.
