Gnomes treatment of the Keeper backfires resulting in a mass possession of the gnomish people. Mutation occurs on a grand scale with survivors becoming the first Goblins.

The gnomes first sensed it in the roots that they venerated and sought to heal the disease by their means and magicks, and it grasped them and they were corrupted, becoming goblins and hobgoblins. A few survivors fled to the outskirts of their realm and sought aid from the Elves.
