The Keepers

Around the world, in many lands and locales, a familiar story is heard. This anomaly has been drawn to light by many a scholar, and in recent years an effort has been made to recognize the similarities of this myth. Often featuring in creation myths, the Keepers are tied with life and magic itself.   They are most often represented by four different trees. In Wosterhiem, they are represented by the Ash, the Oak, the Birch, the Yew. In the Jade Empire, they are referred to as the Four Plants of Eternal Spice. The only deviation from plants is found on Al-Siddig, where they are referred to as the Wellsprings Sweet.   As each culture has there own view of the Keepers and their representation, the similarities are uncanny. There are always four, They are akin but not alike, they are tied to all things living, and they are considered to be intelligent.   While talking trees have been documented and studied, the myths always seem to place the Keepers as something beyond that. Some druidic circles believe that the Keepers are tied to the Weave itself, manipulating magic and thus may live in their own realm of reality. Nonetheless, there is little evidence to show that these things exist, nor have ever, for that matter.   Cuthbert Algood, Myths of Earssea, pg.64
