Werekin (Ware-kin)
A rare phenomenon of this world, the werekin are, in fact, animals who somehow become sapient. This is almost certainly the result of some magical incident, as their innate abilities alone are usually able to surpass those of even the most well-trained Elf. Some more powerful werekin were said to have the abilities of Deities, which leads most who study these beings to assume that they are somehow related--possibly even avatars of these deities. However, these werekin do not behave like most deities, despite sharing some capabilities. They're usually malevolent, almost like demons, who take pleasure in sowing chaos and disharmony.

Anatomy
They always take the form of a wild animal, especially a feline (though they have been known to take other forms).
Genetics and Reproduction
The details are uncertain, but werekin don't appear to live for very long. They surface and disappear again within just a few years--though when they do appear, they are already fully matured.
