Wendan Kyse Character in Dwell | World Anvil

Wendan Kyse (wen-dun kice)

Bard Wendan Kyse

Wendan Kyse is one of very few successful elven artists who explored and revealed to the world the emotional side of being an elf. While often depicted as cold or without emotion (which is how they prefer to be seen), Kyse revealed the side of their culture that very few elves were comfortable discussing in public. As a result, he was unofficially shunned from the community. This was not really intentional, but after his writings began to spread, most of his peers struggled to mask their discomfort--and those who brought it to his attention (apologetically) admitted that they weren't certain if they would be able to correct these behaviors.   He left of his own accord. While these alterations in environment may seem trivial in most other cultures, it is actually very significant in elven culture when people are unable to treat you normally. Enough that leaving entirely was the less painful/isolating option.   After settling down in a small village of humans who also adhered to Transitionalism, his writings became mournful and lonely in a way that only an elf could truly understand (largely because these writings were much less popular among other races, but extremely popular among elves... privately, of course).   The elven government decided it was ridiculous that emotions--one of the most important sides of every mortal being, especially elves who relied on them to create the systems of morality and ethic that are the cornerstone of their society--were the cause of this problem. That, if anything, it was their discomfort with something they didn't understand that drove him away in the first place--which goes against the fundamental tenets of their religion. So, they packed up a small party of officials, social scientists (who would like to collaborate with him) and other close relations and set out to meet him in this small town. They even contacted the village officials and asked them to prepare a modest celebration (which is a very big deal in elven culture, as celebrations are only carried out to commemorate exceedingly important events. They also have no annual celebrations and do not consider birthdays or anniversaries "significant".   So, in secret, the town went about setting up this modest festival in preparation for what was undoubtedly going to be a memorable reunion.   However, when they came to his house with the intent to lure him out into the surprise celebration, they couldn't find him. What they did find, however, was a small folded letter with no markings on the outside. Within its folds was a short message to Mal, the deity of mischief... and its contents were quite unexpected.
