Aether
Aether is an energy type that permeates the universe that has a variety of unique properties. When volumes of the energy reach a certain level in an area a subspace is created. These subspaces are called Aetheric Space and is where most of the known properties of Aether have been observed. Matter in the subspace has its properties altered allowing for things like acceleration to speeds beyond the speed of light, while other forms of energy experience similar differences in their fundamental laws. The ability to transition into and out of these subspaces, or to channel some of the subspaces properties to act in real space are at the forefront of most galactic research, especially when scientists and engineers find the laws of real space interfering with their desired goals. In low densities, Aether does not seem to have much observable effect on observable matter or energy fields and is in general quite harmless. Collection and storage of Aether is a difficult challenge due to normal matter and energy and Aether not interacting until Aether reaches certain density levels, at which point concern over the impacts of forming an Aetheric subspace impacting the area of containment become valid.
Most biologic organisms in contact with high densities of Aether suffer effects of Aether poisoning . Only three known lifeforms have been found that have adapted to be able to not only withstand high levels of Aether density unshielded, but to naturally thrive or harness the energy. the three races are the: Illyari, Gaelas, and one sub-species of humans.
