Personal history
Maferath sired three sons with Gilivhan, his concubine, despite the fact he was married to Andraste. Andraste was too weak to bear children after a long illness, but Maferath needed heirs. Verald was his youngest son. After his mother's death, he was adopted by Andraste.
When Maferath betrayed Andraste in exchange for the lands he and his wife had conquered from the Tevinter Imperium, he ordered his vast armies to retreat back to the Fereldan Valley. He split the land into five; he kept the Fereldan Valley for himself; he gave the Dales to the elves for their part in the Exalted March, as promised by Andraste; he gave the Ciriane lands to Isorath; and he split the lands north of his own between Evrion and Verald, his youngest sons. Verald took the lands to the west, around Nevarra City.
Though he was assigned by his father to rule it, Verald never claimed Nevarra nor sat upon the throne as its king. He was hated by his people, for the power was handed to him, and not earned. Verald hoped to gain some sympathy from his subjects, relying on his claim of being Maferath and Andraste's son. However, this backfired as news of Maferath's betrayal of Andraste spread quickly. All of his court was instantly murdered and he was lucky to escape with his life. His dependence on his father and the resulting downfall is speculated to have been intentional. When he abandoned Nevarra City, it developed into an independed city-state, and then the nation of Nevarra.
He moved south to where his brother Isorath ruled, to Orlais. Isorath was married to a Ciriane woman by the name of Jeshavis who secretly hated the Alamarri. She tolerated the Grand Unification but she would not suffer the rule of an Alamarri, son of Andraste or no. She manipulated the young Verald into attacking her first husband, his brother. Once Verald had managed to kill Isorath, Jeshavis married him, only to kill him shortly after. Jeshavis went on to rule for forty-two years, having finally rid her lands of Alamarri rule.
