Slavery in the World

Slavery is widespread across the continent of Nightmount. It is not illegal in most places and considered survival of the fittest. If you are captured as a slave, you can be released/work your way out. Recently, the practice has become more common as groups of slavers that were previously rivals began banding together as part of The Cartel.

History

Previously, slavers worked in bands that competed with one another over territory and appealing victims (e.g. the especially strong or beautiful). It was relatively rare to hear of someone being captured, as slavers would fight over territory/slaves and attack one another. This makes it easier to transport slaves away from their homes, family and friends, making escape more difficult. That was until about 10 years ago when the charismatic mercenary Lyras took command of his band. Under his leadership, he negotiated deals with neighbouring bands to work together, strengthening their power and organising their operations. With more people and less infighting, he managed to dramatically increase the number of slaves they could acquire, leading to a greater number of people being stolen. This allowed them to lower the price of slaves, selling more people. Where before it was mostly royalty and the very rich that kept them due to the expense, meaning there was relatively limited demand and prices were prohibitively high, it gradually started to become fashionable for less influential and wealthy nobles to keep at least one. This increased demand further, and became known as the Slave Crisis by around 1493. It is still an ongoing problem, growing to the point where the productively of rural areas, especially in The Breadplains, removing vital workers from their farms and causing uproar amongst lower class communities.

Execution

Slavers tend to prowl isolated areas for potential victims. Recently they have begun filtering into the city to find more people to steal, especially at night, as those from rural areas flee from their livelihoods for what they saw as safety.
