Roman Centurion Marcus Aelius leaves Earth for heroic training with the alien Virmiru but due to relativistic time dilation on his travels, he doesn't return until 2002 CE, as the Alpha Centurion.

The centurion named Marcus Aelius wins a competition to study for ten years with an alien culture and bring back what he learns to the Empire. However, due to the vagaries of quantum physics, Marcus doesn’t return to Earth until the early 21st century, when he becomes the Alpha Centurion.
