Lor Republic

The Lor Republic was a star-spanning civilization of more than a hundred worlds, many inhabited by the descendants of humans taken from Earth by the Preservers and seeded on those worlds. Some of the human stock was genetically altered to adapt to the new environments, and others evolved further on their new home worlds.   The inhabitants of the planet Lor-Van began exploring space at the time when the Sinking claimed the ancient cities of Atlantis and Lemuria on Earth, and discovered faster-than-light travel before Europeans discovered America. In the centuries since, the Lor steadily expanded into space, usually encountering less developed races, some of them human as well, and absorbing them into their vast Republic.   The Lor learned of Earth decades ago when they encountered the Terran hero Daedalus, who was exploring the galaxy in his ship, the Icarus. Lor contact with Earth has been limited. Given the number of superhumans there, and the heretical concept that Earth was the mother-world of the human race, the Republic declared the Earth system off-limits and were largely content to allow the Star Knight assigned there to deal with any interstellar concerns.

History

On the borders of the Lor Republic existed various barbaric worlds: some primitive, developing societies, left alone by the Lor, others with spaceflight capabilities of their own, banded together into loose and often temporary and tenuous alliances. These worlds were like wolves at the door of the Republic, fended off by the Lor Star Navy and the cunning of Lor diplomats and mentats. Most such barbarian empires were of little concern to the Republic.   The Lor underestimated a war-leader named Khana, the ambitious queen of a small alliance of worlds ruled from Zultas. More importantly, it led them to underestimate her son and successor, Kinan Khan, who has become, in the modern era, known as The Star-Khan. A military genius, the Star-Khan turned a ramshackle collection of worlds on the fringe of the Republic into a military force without peer. He could have conquered the Lor in his first great war against them, if not for the intervention of Daedalus and the Star Knights.   After a crushing defeat, it took years for the Stellar Khanate to recover, and the Lor Republic was not so likely to underestimate Kinan Khan again. Agents of the Republic kept a close watch on the Khanate for signs of further aggression, although containment remained their policy, as it had been for decades. For some years, the Star-Khan chose the velvet glove of diplomacy over the iron fist of conquest, allowing him time to rebuild, hatch new plans, and plot revenge against those who tried to deny him his destiny. He formed alliances with other worlds on the fringes of the Republic and even found sympathizers within the Republic itself, those who felt the Lor had grown soft and decadent, willing to abandon their destiny to expand across the stars as their gods had commanded them.   When Collapsar destroyed and devoured the capitol world of Magna-Lor, Star-Khan saw his opportunity and seized it. The armies of the Stellar Khanate poured across the borders of the Republic as loyal agents within committed acts of sabotage, opening the way for the invasion. At almost the same time, the Grue struck at the wounded Republic, seizing border worlds and sowing chaos throughout the Star Navy and the bureaucracy with their own sleeper agents. The cunning Star-Khan expected this and turned it to his advantage by making the citizens of the Republic an offer: would they rather become slave subjects of the Grue, crushed beneath the Meta-Mind’s eternal rule, or were they willing to give their allegiance over to a proven general with the military might and skill to oppose the Grue and protect them from this threat as well as the looming danger of Collapsar. Most of the Republic had little choice but to give in to Star-Khan’s demands and elect him Supreme Praetor for as long as the crisis endured. Few had any illusions about the crisis ending anytime soon, if ever.   Star-Khan wasted no time in imposing military rule over the Republic and repelling the Grue invaders. He placed his own generals and officers in key command positions, but also promoted and maintained those in the Star Navy willing to swear allegiance to the new order, vetted by loyal hound mentats. He has promised to begin the process of restoring the lost Republic Senate, but has delayed elections "until such a time as the domain is secure once more" in conjunction with the creation of the Stellar Imperium to replace the old Republic. Order, sure and unrelenting, is the primary business of former Republic member worlds as their citizens attempt to go on with their lives, grateful they do not share the fate of the planets taken by the Grue, or destroyed by the all consuming darkness of Collapsar.
