The Wary Eye
The Wary Eye is a fortified compound in the borderlands of northern Volodaria. It consists of a large central watchtower, surrounded by a series of barracks, all contained within stone walls. The tower is the headquarters of the Wildwatch, the soldiers who guard the Empire from the creatures of the wilderlands: the Giants of the Untamed Hills and the Dragons of the mountains.
The site was first employed as a frontier watchtower during the early years of the Aeldrin-Imperial Frontier Battles, before being acquisitioned by the newly founded Wildwatch, eventually becoming their primary headquarters.
For most of its existence, the compound remained relatively small. The central watchtower housed the Watch's administrative centre, including clerks and chief officers. The Sentinel-Lieutenant, nominal head of the Watchmen, had his office and quarters in the basement of the building. The barracks surrounding it housed the tower's own garrison, as well as bunks for Watchmen not on active duty. In total, the entire complex had capacity for two hundred permanent residents.
In 297 IF, the Wary Eye became the site of the Watch's greatest defeat, during the catastrophe that was the Dragonreign. The complex came under assault by the green dragon Zuddrem, who slaughtered its inhabitants to a man, effectively decapacitating the Watch. He then employed the remnants of the tower as his roost, hiding his hoard of stolen treasures within the central tower. After Zuddrem's defeat in 301 IF, a large portion of his gathered hoard was given to the Watch, so that they could begin to rebuild and expand the complex - by 350 IF, the Wary Eye featured several barracks outside of its inner walls, and a set of outer walls were constructed.
During the early years of Ilar-Thai, the complex's outer barracks were used to house refugees from the Yethisian Invasion and conflicts in Amara. Indeed, the Amaran menace has continued to produce refugees, who have found homes across the west, including the northern townsteads and watchtowers. As a result, the complex grew a larger civilian population, requiring further construction outside of its secondary walls. The Wary Eye currently features a permanent population of around six hundred, earning it the status of a major town.
