Kobolds

Kobolds are a race of small humanoids who inhabit the borderlands of northern Volodaria, especially the Alari Desert and the south-eastern hills. They are appear loosely similar to the Dragonborn of Aoleir , though far smaller and generally less well muscled.  Kobolds are mostly subterranean, populating large networks of caverns and tunnels that run beneath the continent's surface, but above the true Fhaidorca. Kobolds are closely associated to the Volodarian Dragons, earning them the nickname dragonkin. Indeed, much of their culture is centred around worship of the dragons.   Kobold theology seems to be disorganised, but two key beliefs can be found among most kobold groups. The first is that kobolds are the children of the ancient dragons. It is unclear whether this is meant literally or figuratively, but this is generally taken as indicating that it was the ancient dragons that created kobolds, rather than the gods of the mortal races. The second holds that their entire purpose is service to their masters, even to the point of death. Rites and ceremonies vary from group to group, but generally involve chanting and blood sacrifices.   Kobold groups will serve only a specific dragon, who they term their Dragonlord. They will act as the Dragonlord's eyes, ears, arms and teeth in disputes with rival Dragonlords. Often draconic conflicts will be resolved through the death of hundreds of their koboldic minions. Dragonlords aren't known to show particular affection towards their own followers - many will be maimed, killed or eaten as punishment, or out of simple boredom.   There are some who break the chains of their subservience however. While these are few in number, their very existence provides evidence that there is more to the kobold race than their brutal religion. While generally dismissed as unintelligent and barbaric, it should be noted that only an individual possessed of incredible willpower and determination could manage to break free from their own deep-seated beliefs, and leave home and family to explore the alien world beyond.   One example of such an individual was Kaq, a kobold who fled from his master, and brought the secrets of wyrm-domestication to the Bludi Dwarves soon after their arrival in the southern mountains.
