Personal history
Mika was born in a middle city to a pair of concert musicians. For several years of her schooling, Mika tried to follow in their footsteps and learn the Đàn tranh--both due to pressure from them and a desire to be like them--but she found herself unable to really connect with the music and her years of forced practice poisoned her toward the art, as well as strained her relationship with her parents. When she was sixteen she finally snapped and, realizing she felt calmest was when she was journaling, turned to calligraphy. After graduating, Mika joined her city's calligraphy guild, which is where she met Jin Cheng. To a young woman who felt lonely and misunderstood, a young man who seemed to understand her interests and care about her was like a dream come true, and Mika and Jin raced into a relationship. They were together for four years before finally getting married in 1610.
In 1612, Mika got pregnant and Jin--looking for everything in a relationship except responsibility--divorced her, leaving her to fend for herself. Feeling judged by those around her and not wishing to run into Jin anymore in a city that was small enough that it was likely to be a regular occurrence, Mika stayed with her parents only until the baby-- Aiko Li --was born before heading to the next town over. She spent two years jumping from home to home and city to city, moving ever westward to evade judgement, before finally settling in Hairen. She currently lives with Dai Lôi and works with The Hairen Calligraphy Guild, doing her best to take care of her daughter and find a permanent home for them.
