Personal history

Duaa was born to an Eilisian mother, Murtada, and an Osanaran father, Jamar, making it illegal for her to have powers due to "impure" blood. Of course, having an Eilisian mother there was still a chance for her to inherit powers, and it was discovered when she was ten that she did indeed have fire powers. Her family was sentenced to stoning and she fled from Eilis. She was taken in by a member of the Pastyna Regiment, with whom her parents were allies, and spent several months with them, learning to harness her powers, before her surviving father came and joined her in the Regiment. Duaa grew up a part of the Regiment, fighting for their cause, putting her powers to good use, but she always longed to go back to her own people and for her family to return to their home. It wasn't until she was twenty-one that her father allowed her to return, permission given grudgingly since she could be stoned on sight. When she arrived back in Eilis, she kept her powers hidden—though she still used them secretly in service to the Regiment. She found a job in the palace as a cook and began talking to those around her about the tradition of genetic purity and whether it was actually in their gods' teachings and whether it was really just. She was only able to keep her secret from being public knowledge for five years, at which point she was given away and forced to flee back to the Regiment, this time with a bounty on her head. Though widespread change in Eilisian custom wouldn't come for fifty more years, she'd introduced ideas many hadn't considered before, fed the flames in a few who'd already agreed with her, and overall been the spark of that change.
