Atmosnake

Demon; Dangerous and Social

Created by Liza

Basic Information

Anatomy

Normal

They have a highly flexible vertebrate spine and skull making up their skeleton. They have very strong muscles, especially in their jaw. Females are about 6 feet long and 1.5 inches thick, and males are about 4 feet long and one inch thick. They have turquoise and royal purple scales and three long silver fangs, two downwards, one upwards. They have silvery, feathered wings extending outwards from a quarter of the way down the body and with a wingspan equal to the length of the atmosnake. Their eyes are silver with slit-like pupils. Their scales act as armour that protects best against blunt weapons.

Alpha

Every group has one alpha male and one alpha female. They are an extra two feet long and .5 inch thick, with their wings in proportion to their bodies. They have a row of silver spines extending down their back and a sharp silver tip to their tails. Their armour is stronger and their teeth are sharper. Their eyes are electric blue instead of silver.

Biological Traits

Females are typically larger; six feet long and one and a half inches thick instead of the males' four feet long and one inch thick. Alpha male and females will be bigger, stronger, and have silver spines and blue eyes. Different colonies will have very distinct patterns of purple and turquoise on their bodies, which will change if an atmosnake changes colonies (although this only happens rarely).

Genetics and Reproduction

Astrosnakes mate for life and are very protective of their partners. Females lay four eggs at a time, which are a silver colour when initially laid and turning more and more turquoise over time. The eggs are very hard, harder than the scales of the grown snake. It takes about 7 months for an egg to hatch.

Growth Rate & Stages

Lifespan: 80 years   Egg Incubation: Seven months   Fully Grown: 20 years   Sexual Maturity: 25 years   End of Sexual Maturity: 60 years   Strength Decline: N/A

Ecology and Habitats

They prefer to live in colonies of about 20. Their ideal habitat is forested hills. They sleep in caves and use them for shelter, so open caves are a must-have. Their prey is usually mammals, so they like forested areas with animals such as deer. They can go a fairly long time without water, but require access to fresh water at least once a month.

Dietary Needs and Habits

It eats a diet that primarily consists of mammals such as deer, but they aren't incredibly picky about what they eat. They will occasionally eat fungus that grows in caves if in desperate need of food--they need to hunt every few days. They will attack their prey in pairs, biting the animal and waiting for it to pass out from the venom before eating it.

Biological Cycle

As adults, they shed their scales during late spring and early summer, replacing them one at a time to maintain armour. Young ones that aren't fully grown will shed at the end of every spring and fall to account for growth.

Additional Information

Social Structure

Two atmosnakes from each colony--one male and one female--are deemed alphas, and they lead and protect their colonies. They are stronger, smarter, and appear different. These demons find a partner when they reach sexual maturity and mate for life. They form a strong emotional bond with their mate and will hunt with and protect them. Children are considered a communal responsibility and are raised by the colony under the eye of the parents and the alphas.

Uses, Products & Exploitation

The Atmosnake is not domesticatable, and therefore not very useful. However, the venom is a very popular poison among those who know how to get it.

Facial characteristics

They have silver eyes with slit-like pupils. Three silver, dull fangs jut out of their mouths; two from the top and one from the bottom. They otherwise appear just like a regular snake. They have long, flat heads with a large mouth and small nostrils.

Geographic Origin and Distribution

They are concentrated deep in the hills to the southeast of Amenia, fairly far from the actual city.

Average Intelligence

They are smart enough to hunt in pairs, identify mates, and live in colonies. However, they are not highly intelligent beings.

Perception and Sensory Capabilities

They have incredibly good sight with an increased colour range and weak x-ray vision. They can see up to 60 kilometres away. They have excellent night vision and can see in almost perfect darkness. Their sense of smell is human-like, but they have a good scent memory and can remember scents from childhood at the end of their life. Their sense of touch is slightly numbed due to the thickness of their scales, but they are very good at sensing temperature. They are entirely deaf.

Author's Notes

The atmosnake is my first attempt at creating my own species and my first original demon. It was a really fun article for me to write and a unique and interesting concept to explore. I greatly enjoyed developing this species and look forward to using it in my writing.
