Demonic Earth

It's many years in the future. Humanity had been working towards a technological utopia in this time, and for the most part, succeeding. People are getting smarter, better, more advanced. Who knows where humanity could go; with a little work, we could have become gods. We shape our own paths, we have gone so far that the ideas of even robots and AI are pathetic--nothing compared to what a simple person could do with the technology they possess. However, tensions had silently been rising between countries. The more power people gain, the more power people want to keep.   All of this was halted when there was a mysterious introduction of demons to the world. It began slowly, with small, bug-like demons being found by scientists, but eventually, there were huge, diverse demon species wandering the Earth. They were mysterious and new, and since humanity hadn't faced something it wasn't instantly capable of overpowering in years, people were unprepared for the threat. Demons were found to be deadly and people died in masses, underestimating their new enemies. Weapon and armour development have recently become a priority in a desperate attempt to protect the people.   Society had to adapt rapidly, developing defences against the demons' attack. Practically all technology besides weaponry was abandoned if it wasn't considered crucially important. The very rich panicked and went one of two ways: the superstitious quicky assembled underground bunkers and built communities in them with the intent to stay there for centuries, or however long it takes for demons to disappear. They rarely faired well; their hastiness led to their deaths quickly, either by disease or by demonic attacks. The ambitious and power hungry saw an opportunity: they built megacities they governed and provided protection to anyone who would live there. The people that failed to prepare as such were demolished, either by the demonic threat or the fear of citizens.   With the looming threat of societal collapse, governments changed. Very few new cities managed to maintain a stable government similar to some of the democracies today. The others developed a controlling, corrupt dictatorship or oligarchy existing behind the facade of democracy. Normalcy is the only acceptable existence; differences are seen as dangerous, unstable, and a recipe for disaster and death. Fear rules the people--the solution to a potential threat is to destroy it. This is especially true for those in power, particularly leaders. Anyone who doesn't have power is crushed below the heel of the government.   Magic is a hidden and mysterious force. The general populous believes that magic is an ability possessed by demons and no one else. It is seen as unpredictable, dangerous, and taboo. However, there is a select few--often those in positions of great power in corrupt governments--who are capable of using incredibly useful magic. The art of magic has been honed and taught for years to ensure the powerful remain that way. It is a failsafe, an unseen weapon that can be used to destroy anything that stands in their way. They are exceptionally good at keeping it hidden, and even more so at using it to achieve their own goals. It takes time and practice to use and requires great skill to produce even minor effects, but these people have had a lot of time and a lot of resources at their fingertips.
