Illithid Empire

The empire of Illithid.

Structure

Although all the thrall races (Gith, Grimlocks, Quaggoths and Oortlings) can and often are eaten by Illithid and their Urophion and Intellect Devourer underlings, oortlings serve as a staple food for the brain-eating members of the empire, especially the lower ranks. Illithid find them unappetizing, but filling. Some are also used for light manual labor, such as cleaning.   Quaggoths and Grimlocks are used as brute labor. Grimlocks are given the tasks that a typical quaggoth isn't smart enough for, while quaggoth are given tasks that require climbing. Apart from these differences, grimlock and quaggoth laborers have very similar roles.   Quaggoths also serve as bodyguards, along with Gith and Urophion. Urophion typically guard stationary locations, and especially situations where illithid are concerned about interference from other illithid, since urophion aren't thralls. Quaggoth are used when climbing is necessary or when they want only a big brute. Gith are used when intelligence and finesse is needed in a bodyguard, or if a burst of speed is likely to be needed.   Intellect Devourers and the occasional highly trusted Gith act as supervisers or overseers, monitoring and caring for thralls. They might tend to a group of Oortlings, or give direction to a group of manual laborers.   Gith also do a variety of other duties that the Illithid would rather not bother with and their other thralls lack the intelligence for.   Lastly, Gith are also used as gourmet meals. The most delicious meals are from intelligent creatures with complex and interesting lives, and as such, some Illithid specialize in raising and training gourmet gith, providing them with exciting, interesting lives with relatively more free-will than most thralls, only to devour them in Performance Eating events. The same fate also awaits any thrall who rebels, who are usually gith as well.
