Eastern Edekhan Empire

Structure

The Edekhan Empire uses a traditional feudal style of rulership with a social structure like a pyramid. Above everyone else is the God-Emperor of the Edekhan Empire, the king of kings who is a legend and a real person at the same time. Below them are the kings, each appointed in person by the God-Emperor to oversee an imperial province. Under the king are the dukes that manage the duchies inside the imperial provinces, small territories to easily manage the structure. And finally, the last imperial rank is the count who manage the county or fief, a combination of five or more castles in a territory. The knights and barons are a separated rank, managing the individual castles of the family. Depending on the power and influence of the family, it can have more than one king, or not have one and only having dukes or only counts, but only one family can have a God-Emperor, and all the other Edekhan Families are expected to follow them.

Public Agenda

The public agenda of the Edekhan Empire is to expand the influence of the Edekhan Culture and have it dominate all the lesser cultures. They see themselves as the heir of Ares, the one who conquered half the known world, and so they want to live up to the expectations and reclaim all that is have been lost, fighting against the barbarians that have snatched such victory from their hands. It an Us vs. Them, civilization against the barbarians.

Assets

The Edekhan Empire counts with the entirety of the Laconian continent under its grasp, and with it 50 millions of people of varying ethnicities. Besides, it has duchies and counties in other parts of the world akin to little colonies, like one in Alsia, the duchy of the Fostonway Family.

With the gold, tin, copper and silver of the different territories under its wing, it excels at selling mostly manufactured and specialized equipment, but no precious metal can compare to the vast amounts of slaves that it manages under the territory, being at least the 40% of the population under the empire, it grow to be the largest and most expensive commodity that can be bought or sold in the empire, a business that feeds the war machine and it’s the most lucrative endeavor.

The Imperial Edekhan Army consist of the personal retinue of the God-Emperor and at least 30% of the troops of the neighboring kingdoms. With them, the God-Emperor can have an army of at least 200.000 warriors in a short amount of time with 100.000 more along the way. The Empire as one has at least a million warriors ready to die for the emperor, with half a million as reserves and another half a million as green recruits. The Empire has in total 10.000 battle warlocks and a fleet of 700 warships to sail the entire world.

Of course, in recent history the economic turmoil left after the Shattering war left all the kingdoms in high levels of debt and loss of manpower resulting in now having half the advertise amount of warriors and warships at their disposal. In any case, those numbers reflect the Eastern Edekhan Empire at its finest, not in the actual lore.

History

Recorded history doesn’t go too far into the past, so only mith remains as the only reliable way to know what happened in the world when the empires were young. Legends say about Ares, the first god emperor of what would later become the Edekhan Empire.

He was a young boy that lost his parents in a lizardfolk raid when traveling the desert. Abandoned in a world that was hostile to him he decided to survive and absorbed the cruelty of the world to mold himself into a better man, surviving the desert at the age of twelve like a real legend and coming back home with one goal in mind: Exterminate the barbarians that cause so much pain to him. His body after two years in the desert was molded to a harsh life back then, and so he accompany a small platoon of soldiers in raids against the barbarians, killing many and taking as prisoners many more. Soon enough his castle was full of barbarian prisoners, and so to avoid a rebellion he spend two years indoctrinating them into worshiping him because one cannot rebel if one does not see the shackles.

His friends were few, a band of soldiers and mercenaries of Edekahn origin that didn’t had wife’s nor children. If one died than the entire lineage would disappear with him. And so Ares concocted a plan to face extinction intermarrying the families and granting same gender equality to those who fought besides him, and so many more flocked under his county. He started marring his soldiers whiting his family, his courtiers with the descendants and later himself and his family again with those descendants. He had a eugenic plan of intermarrying the Edekhan race to produce the most powerful offspring. With the future of his family now secured, he adventure outside of Edekhan territory to continue his conquest.

With his loyal army of slaves and his extended family cladded in Maximillian style armor he waged war after war against the confederation of Qart Hadasth, the nearest power in the Laconian continent. He spent 25 years in three bloody wars to completely wipe them out, capturing their capital of Qart Hadasth and turning it into his new capital. The Elesh and Minotaur’s that commanded the confederation were sold into slavery and striped of their regalia. With the continent secured he went south and waged war against the Tusken people, he visited the First Temple of Ninnghizida, the local deity, and that’s where he received the Green Vision, a vision of the future which its contents are unknown but Ares told everyone that the vision urged him to enslave humanity because some day they would destroy the world. And so, invoking divine right for humanity Ares started enslaving them to make them part of his empire in a more complete way. He destroyed the First Temple and Ninghizida called a Jihad against him.

To stop him, Ninnghizida had called an old friend of her to battle Ares: Lady Hawkwind. And together the two friends battled him until both of them laid dead in the temple. Ares drank the blood of Ninghizida and fell ill because of the poisons, but using unknown methods he managed to stay alive and with a new body, having absorbed the regeneration of the Tusken Goddess. Now he would live enough to see his dream come true.

And so his personal crusade carry on, with him facing enemy after enemy carving a bloody path of genocide and war wherever he went, facing odds staked against him and still managing to make it out alive. Until he arrived at the Hot Gates of the Elesh Kalermenian League.

His first and only defeat in his life would also be his last. In the mountain pass of the Hot Gates that opened the Greek mainland to him he was stopped by an army of hoplites that managed to push him back. And then the Elesh Sun Sorcerers laid his trap, they unleashed the volcano Etna and send the toxic fumes against the army of Ares in a suicidal attempt to kill him. And that which they did, but slowly thanks to his marvelous healing factor.

His army retreated back to Qart Hadasht and stop all the wars for two years, the only years in which he actually managed the real. And so, he died of carcinoma, leaving the mantle of God-Emperor to his son Ares the Second. Soon later he amassed an army and traveled back to the Hot Gates to bring the exterminatus back to the Elesh mainland, but that story is for another day.

Territories

1000 years ago the Edekhan Empire reached half of the known world, including Laconia, D´Anconia, Asakusa and Sirakusa. Later it separated into two empires, the Southern Empire and the Northern Empire. The Southern Empire disappeared from history 600 years ago and now the Northern Empire has presence only in the Laconian territory and other small colonies in other parts of the world.

Religion

The Edekhans are atheist by nature, they lack the empathy and wonder for the world to have the anthropological need for a religion, and so they consider themselves no less than demi gods, with the emperor being a true god on earth. And so, they don’t worship no one but themselves.

Because of it, they see religion as a method of control, something that only monkeys and degenerate races have. So they leave completely religious freedom to their non Edekhan subjects, with no taxes on religion nor persecution.

Foreign Relations

The Edekhan empire after the war of the shattering has good trading relationships with the rest of the four super powers of the world after signing the Aura Pax Accords, with an official end of the hostilities and in an economic crisis it has been obligated to trade with their mortal enemies: The Kalermenian League.

The highly xenophobic Edekhans are at odds with everyone, being a race of conquerors who adore a genocidal tyrant as a god-emperor. But of course they don’t actually want to kill everybody, only to have them enslaved and working for them, with a good enough economy and total religious freedom many other races tend to flock to them as client states to be under its wing, because it’s a preferable alternative to being in ruins.

After all they are considered very sophisticated and well mannered, with religious tolerance unprecedented in other races with a taste for human flesh that other races do share.

Agriculture & Industry

The Edekhan empire is an industrial power, having not many natural resources but being a top buyer and producer of manufactured and specialized equipment. They employ slave work to do all the work for them but in a special almost ritualistic way, because they buy slaves as families and train them during a period of one hundred years to make one task and one task only, being able to pass the experience and training that they receive to future generations that would be able to improve the techniques of their ancestors and later pass them onto their sons and so on and so on. With that technique the Edekhan slaves are famous for being trained with an elite level on their respective work, with a fanatical devotion to perfectionism and care for the details.

And so, they produce slave singers, slave architects, slave smiths, and so on and so on. They tend to dominate their respective fields like if they had live 100 years doing the same task. And so they wipe out the competence because their ventures are backed up by the empire itself. Like that they have a steady grip on the economic growth of at least 30 regions and are the wealthiest empire on the world, only surpassed by the Kalermenian League.

Trade & Transport

They use two transport networks:
  • The Stone Roads, a complex system of roads that drain 155 of the GDP to maintain that connects all the villages, castles and ports of the empire in one huge vein pumping good to the hearth of the empire.
  • And the Sky Ports, a system of flying ships that the warlocks fuel with their magic’s to make them fly.

Education

They use a strict system of teach called “The Third Energies School” to provide the Edekhan populace with all the opportunities it needs.

The First Energy is the Publicani School, educating the young soon to be politicians of the tomorrow in rhetoric, philosophy, laws, anthropology, economy and other social sciences. They form the backbone of the Edekhan Nobliti, training them to being kings, dukes, counts, master merchants and cuning spies.

The Second Energy is the Warlock School, where they learn to use the power of old magic and blood magic to see the unseen, the school of magic that uses the magic of the noble scions Edekhans to dominate the four elementals that rule the world, the gnomes of the earth, the salamanders of fire, the sylph of air and the undines of the water. After enslaving the elementals they can use their power as they please, from combat to help with the everyday life of the edekhans. For example, you can use a salamander to destroy an enemy ship or an undine to provide with water to regions with droughts.

Finally, the Third Energy is the officer’s school were the warriors are trained. There they are drafted into mastering the fine art of war, learning leadership, tactics, military history, swordsmanship, survival techniques, etc., everything that can help you to being a good conqueror. Here they train the knights, royal guards, generals, captains, drill sergeants and the rest to specializing into perfection.

Infrastructure

They use a complex system of stone roads and ports to travel along the empire and the world. The most important cargo uses the Sky Ports of the cities, the most expensive type of Edekhan building, consisting of a special ship that has 5 warlocks that uses magic to travel the air currents and fly everywhere. Of course this is a taxing endeavor and so they trips are fast but somewhat short, or long but slow, so they tend to have little military use. That way they can bypass blockades and difficult terrain while traveling, reaching more places than any other empire when trading. And so the empire is connected more than ever, using the warlocks to travel in the air currents to deliver messages faster, with a infrastructure based around this kind of travel they have developed faster than anyone. Technology and ideas travel faster, people too.

In short, in the Edekhan Empire all roads lead to Kahlenberg, its capital.

Major Exports

They export a large quantity of slave for surrounding allies, slaves with specialized training in some way, like expert craftsmen or just raw workers to mine something. They have good relationships with the Holy See, the ones that buy the vast majority of slaves in exchange for Hrismarian warriors to form the Varangian Guard, a military order of Hrismarian warriors that specialize in telekinesis above all else.

They also export manufactured products, like essential oils, perfumes, jewelry, art pieces, instruments, etc, a great majority of luxury items to overwhelm the markets of other races and help them to adopt the Edekhan Way of life. Edekhan gold pieces are very valuable, especially for humanity.

They also have a complex mercenaries system, paying the expeditions of officers from the Third Energy in times of peace to work as mercenaries in foreign wars.

Major Imports

Silver is extremely rare, and so is cheaper to import it from the Elesh colonies than acquiring it home. For the oils and commodities need to import whale oil from the Holy See, and large quantity of fish too because their seas are full of predators, not fish to eat.

And so they tend to over rely on trading to acquire a surplus of food because their territories can only sustain the necessary food to sustain itself and nothing more, a small change in the crops could lead to famine or widespread high food prices. Fish and grain are the most expensive foods in the empire, with rice being the second most expensive but most valuable of all because of how easy is to make it grow with a couple of warlocks. All the rice seeds are imported from the Rainbow Sea, where the tiger people of the Sunstrider people live.

Furs and other skins are also imported from Alsia to make coats for the nobility, disliking mammoth skin and mountain goat furs. But they don’t tend to buy walrus skin, nor its tooth’s because they consider it a barbarian costume.

Legislative Body

The Publicani School trains the young nobility to be part of the judicial and legislative body of the empire, and so it has two categories of training, in this case we will talk about the Legislatorex, the ones who creates the laws and determine the treasury of the empire.

The Legislatorex office is occupied by 30 noble Edekhans who can trace their linage near Ares in their respective biological three, like most offices. One has to train as a lawyer and economist to have this office also. If you are part of this office you are appointed a territory by the Emperor himself and are send there to study the economic growth of the place, studding its mores and folks to create laws that suit the place, in order to maintain the populace complacent. Later, you hand your report to the assembly of 30 more legislators and in tandem with the emperor has to decide what economic policies are put in place to make the empire grow, more or less.

Judicial Body

The judges, full time lawyers, tax collectors and other bureaucrats are in the second school of the First Energy, the Iudex.

In the imperial bureaucracy they are the ones that enforce the law on the land, revising it when the lawmakers gather to impose them, and edit them in accordance to imperial preference. And so the two powers oversee each other so no group has more power in the decision making than the other. Finally they have the Publicani Corps to collect taxes in the empire. Each Legislatorex is accompanied by a Publicani Leader and a X number of lesser publicanis that is determined by the number of castles in a province. They later make the census of each of the counties of the imperial province and determine the worth in coins of everything, from the soldier’s equipment, to the buildings, slaves, etc, and are tasked to take as tax the 2% of the total for the count of the realm. Later, another bureaucrat is task to tax the worth of the duke in the same way, later the king, and to bring the 2% of the wealth to the imperial capital. Other taxes do exist, but this is the only tax of imperial decree, other taxes vary according to the preferences of each territory.
