No one, not even the old gods, know where the Black Blades came from. They are afraid to look into it, for who has the power to give mortals the ability to kill the spirits.

Mechanics & Inner Workings

THe black blades are a set of 7-24 weapons including knives, swords, various pole arms and a rumored ax. IN all ways besides their special properties, they function much in the same way as any weapon of there style made from normal Steel or iron. The part(s) made from black steel weight the same, are magnetic and inflict normal wounds to flesh and bone.
Black steel blades are remarkable in a few ways that make them things of great awe.
1) The ability to destroy Aether energy the makes up members of the "First children" (AKA: the Old Gods, the Grey ones, the Spirits) and thus kill them. Questions like "how do you kill a ghost" are not an issue for these weapons.
2) As a wielder uses them, it is report that the shape of the weapon slowly changes to best suit their preferred fighting style. This process can take some time and if a change is significant, it can be detrimental until the blade is done changing. It is said that once a user who preferred halberd got there hands on one that was in the form of a dagger. The transformation took months.
3) The weapons have a way of being "Forgotten" once they are no longer required, sitting in the armory of wherever they were left for decades of entries until it was required again, leaning in a corner.
