Merchants can either be local, or traveling. They either set up shops or move via caravans to sell their goods. Merchants rarely produce anything themselves, they mostly just collect and sell valuables, and find customers who might need them. Artisans often partner with Merchants in order to not have to interact with clients, while the Merchants expertly haggle on their behalf.
