Dragons Myth in D&D | World Anvil

Dragons

Dragons are large, lizard-like creatures present in innumerable forms and dispositions throughout the realms; from the petrifying, though diminutive basilisk to the divine great wyrms which towering hundreds of feet into the clouds and invoke hurricanes with a word.   Dragons are a broad classification including true dragons, but also Wyverns, basilisks, and Behirs. Most dragons possess a supernatural ability ranging from magical breath weapons to petrifying stares to spellcasting, and all dragons have six limbs, which distinguishes the dragons from their four-limbed lizard-like cousins, the Saurians.   All dragons lay eggs, though their maternal instincts and brood dens vary wildly by species. Once hatched, the young dragon grows endlessly in size, strength and power until their final breath. To date, only true dragons have grown long enough to become a Great Wyrm, titanic draconians said to rival the true gods. The personality of a dragon varies dramatically, however virtually all dragons are prideful to a fault and at least moderately territorial.

Draconian Adaptability

Dragons possess a variety of magical and physical power, but among their less overt abilities is their infinite capacity for magical adaptation. Under immense or persistent pressure, a dragon's personality, physiology and even their magical ability can change. This mutative adaptation has given rise to tall tales of new draconian species: dragons made of molten rock living with active volcanoes, blind hunter-dragons of the cavernous underdark and witch-dragons of the The Wailing Wood.

Dragonborn

Dragonborns are more thoroughly explored in The Mortal Races, however suffice to say here that the original dragonborns were the children of a polymorphed true dragon mating with a mortal, be that mortal elvish, human or otherwise. Dragonborn themselves give rise to dragonborn children, so their lineages now continues of their own accord.

On the Origin of Dragons

Accepted knowledge tells that dragons were born from a gift of magic granted to an ancient Saurian in an age long ago, and in the absence of other explanations, it is assumed this first dragon grew to become the Lord of Dragons, a god among the draconians which has since been lost to time.

Great Wyrms

Great Wyrms are those rare few dragons which have seen a millenia rise and fall, they are almost incomprehensibly large and wield unimaginable strength which legends claims rivals the might of gods. A rare few great wyrms are known, all of them presently dead.

Dragonmetal

The petrified scales of dragons buried beneath the earth and long fossilized into a kind of strange ore which can be refined and turned into weaponry, armor and takes to magical enchantments exceedingly well.
