Goblin Spires

CUENDISH: GOL HELEZË, GULUZHI: UL ZUHAN, MARISCINE: MALÉ TUR, SILVAN: RAS GOL, SINDARIN: RAS GLAN

It is as if the mountains themselves are playing tricks on me. As if they get up and dance every time I close my eyes. This is absurd! Or perhaps I am mad as they said.

I suppose I cannot discount that...

—Agustin, Mariscine explorer

The Goblin Spires are a range of jagged granite peaks to the north of Cuendar. They divide the Fae Weald from the rest of the continent. They are innavigable by humans, and those who venture too far find themselves getting terribly lost.

The Spires also house the Halls of the Goblin King: a labyrinthine series of burrows and passageways inhabited by goblins and goblinfolk. In the hearts of the labyrinth lies the Court of the Goblin King, who rules the Spires from his throne of sticks and bones.

Inhabitants

The Mark of the Tree

The Ulzu Rec navigate the Spires using special marks carved into trees. The marks are usually simple pictographs imbued with magic that grounds them against the shifting geography of the Spires. Common marks include black circles (for entrances to the Halls), trees (for safe resting places), and arrows (for plentiful hunting grounds).

Goblins and goblinoids have lived in the Goblin Spires for as long as anyone can remember. Most live in the Halls and serve the Goblin King. These goblins are known as "Urgun Dar," which means "Servants of the King." Smaller independent tribes of goblins live nomadic lives outside of the Halls of the Goblin King, including the Kuz Rec ("People of the Skull"), the Ulzu Rec ("People of the Tree"), and the Fantulhaya ("The Trickers").

The goblins of the Spires generally speak Guluzhi, which is a Fae language spoken by most goblinoids. There are small differences between the Guluzhi of the Urgun Dar and the Guluzhi of the other goblin tribes, but they are mutually intelligible.

Wildlife

Flora

Forests of large, ancient evergreen trees dominate most of the Spires, including red cedars, northern hemlocks, and other firs and pines. The Spires are also the only places in the world where wild goblin fruits can be found, including amarinthine, buglewort, and brumebulb. These rare fruits are known for their strange, seemingly magical properties and their inability to be grown for agricultural consumption.

Fauna

Mammals that call the Goblin Spires home include deer, elk, goats, crag cats, owlbears, and wolves. Various bird species also inhabit the goblin spires, including passerines like the rook, the hooded shrike, and the acorn woodpecker; raptors like the great horned owl, the red-tailed hawk, and the golden eagle; and monstrous species like the peryton.
