Fae Weald
CUENDISH: FË URD, MARISCINE: FÉ ACRE, SILVAN: MAR TAW, SINDARIN: ERYN DRÛ
I looked up, searching for the horizon, and though there certainly was one, I could not find it. Only the rich soil and the silent mist and the ancient trees and the ember-glow of the sky. With this confusion came a sense of both fear and clarity, as if I was an intruder in this land. As if this was the way it was always meant to be.
—Dalia, Losing the Way
The Fae Weald is a massive primeval forest in the north of Cuendar. It is a land of eternal twilight, of whispered secrets, and of haunting and ancient beauty. Most people who venture into the Fae Wild seeking something specific get lost, but the lost often find themselves finding what they are looking for.
The Weald is home to the fae courts, both Seelie and Unseelie. It is also the homeland of the elves, who are its most common inhabitants. Along the coast lies the city of Pann, where the Seelie Court is held each season.
Inhabitants
The Weald is home to a diverse group of fae inhabitants. Most numerous are the wood elves, who tend to the Weald as though it were a garden. The wood elves are mostly nomadic, traveling in small family groups to forage and hunt for food. They mostly speak Silvan, which is a Fae language closely related to the Sindarin spoken by the high elves of Pann.
Some True Fae also inhabit the Weald, and they are usually tied to particular geographic features. Dryads can often be found inhabiting the trees and shrubs, while rusalka and naiads can be found amongst the streams and rivers and ponds. The motivations of these creatures are unknown, because they rarely interact with humans.
Wildlife
Flora
The trees in the Weald are mostly old-growth conifers that stand hundreds of meters tall. Species recorded include the twilight redwood, the giant sequoia, and the golden spruce. The forest is also home to bright flowers such as the bluebell, the fae bonnet, and the wild primrose, while the forest floor is inhabited by creeping fungal carpets.
Fauna
Mammals that call the Fae Weald home include deer, elk, wild unicorns, foxes, and wild hounds. The calls of birds can be heard frequently in the Weald, but they generally do not show themselves except to people they trust. Birds sighted in the Weald include great horned owls and carrion crows. Fireflies are also common in the Weald, in addition to crickets and butterflies. More monstrous species endemic to the Weald include basilisks, great toads, and skeletal spiders.
