Fu Mei

Fu Mei grew up in a traveling caravan, and has been a wandering spirit her entire life. Her father was a silk merchant, and traveled all across Asia peddling his goods. Mei idolized him growing up, and when the Cataclysm happened and New Silk was discovered, she saw an opportunity for their family. But her father was stubborn, and refused to buy into the idea, preferring to stick to lands and goods he knew.

Mei was distraught by this, but had inherited her fathers stubbornness and took off with a couple other members of the caravan one day, heading for Crossroads. Upon arriving in the desolate land, the traders began a cycle of buying from the Daoists and the Orthodoxy, and traveling around to the various hamlets and farmsteads that were springing up. These first few traveling trader caravans were the lifeblood of civilization in the area outside of Crossroads Proper. They provided the resources the people living in remote locations throughout the desert needed to survive, and in exchange were offered free protection from local religious organizations.

As the years past, Mei turned into the de facto leader of her own trading caravan, but the harsh environment and constant threat of religious fanatics, as well as the Retribution Beasts, kept the size of the caravan small. Few roaming traders stayed in the area for very long, preferring to buy goods and return to their mainland, selling for marked up prices. Mei, however, was determined to carve out a life here, and became well-respected within the area for her constant dedication to the people of Crossroads.

She returned home a couple times, but her family never forgave her for leaving, so she was always quick to return to Crossroads.
