Supermoon Snakes

When the supermoon happens twice a year there is two chances of children to come of age, this is when they are allowed to perform magic, As the ruling that the elite brought in states that only children over the age of 12 can perform magic, for their own safety. When the supermoon is at its fullest, it’s the easiest time to cast a spell as the connection to the force of magic is at its strongest. This means that twice a year the children that have turned 12 are brought in front of their village/ town during the supermoon celebration and cast their first spell.   The spell itself is purely for show, as its to light a fire, the size and strength of the fire is very telling to the ability of the child caster, once the fire is lit its allowed to burn out so that fire snakes are produced. The fire snakes are important to the tradition as it teaches the children that every spell has a consequence, and that consequence is usually on nature.   Once all the fires are out and the snakes have been produced the fire snake buns are brought out, these are sweet honey flavoured buns that have a blueberry stripe down the back mimicking the fire snakes themselves. These are the staple to any supermoon celebration as the rarity of the ingredients and the excess time that’s put into them is what makes them so special, often people will save up stores of the ingredients specifically for these treats.     For the recipe
  1.  Start by making sure that you have two separate bowls one for measuring then one for mixing. Take the measuring bowl and fill it up with flour then tip it into the mixing bowl.
  2. Then half fill up the measuring bowl with water then add in parts to the flour, mixing it as you go with either a tool or your hands. Once all the water is added it should be starting to make a sticky ball.
  3. Add 3 spoonful’s of the bubbling starter to the dough and start to mix together this will improve the texture and make it stick together.
  4. Once it’s a non-sticky ball cover it over and let it sit overnight.
  5. The next morning, take the dough which should have got bigger and start working the dough so that it’s a good consistency. Whilst working the dough add in the spoonful of honey.
  6. Split the dough by taking about a ¼ off and putting it aside. Let the main bulk of the dough rest back in the bowl.
  7. Taking the blueberries mash them up in a bowl so that the skins are broken and the juice and pulp is forming a liquid. Try and pick out the larger bits of pulp and skins as this will effect the dough.
  8. Using the small bit of dough work it in the bowl with the blueberries so that it takes in the liquid and changes colour to a purply-blue, if it’s a lot of liquid you might need to add a bit of flour to make it the right texture.
  9. For shaping the dough into the shape of a fire snake. Cut the large amount of dough into equal parts and roll into balls. Then cut the blue mixture into the same amount of pieces as the white mixture. This is the stripe down back of the snake.
  10. Take the white ball of dough and cut it into three smaller balls, roll all these out so that they are like long tubes, attach the three ends together and plait the strands so that they’re forming the body of the snake, attach the ends together and pull into a point.
  11. Roll out the blue strip into a tube and attach to the top of the snakes body down the centre channel.
  12. Then take a knife and cut shallow slits into the body of the snake then pull them into a small point, this will crispen and form the spikes of the snake.
  13. Then bake on the fire making sure to move the slab so that all sides are given heat equally. Once the bread has gone a golden brown and is hollow sounding when tapped then it is fully cooked.
