Bolt Beetle Beams

It is common knowledge that an animal's nervous system communicates throughout the host via electric signals. Movements, language, instincts, reactions, everything is communicated with electricity.   It's when communicating with other creatures, same or different specie, that animals stop relying on electrical signals. All that is, except Bolt Beetles. An enormous black beetle the size of a fist, with a hard carapace and a set of antennae, the Bolt Beetle seemed to either miss the evolutionary step to use other forms of communication, or was too stubborn to change. If it isn't broken, don't fix it, right?   The Bolt Beetle gathers it's thoughts, intentions, plans, or feelings into a ball of electricity with a blue-print of neural pathing baked in and discharges it towards another Bolt Beetle. For many reasons, this is a fantastical experience for spectators. When among a Bolt Beetle colony, there could be thousands of beetles around. They could be on the ground, clinging to the wall and ceiling, or flying around. Other than the soft humming of wings, one wouldn't hear anything other than the soft 'zzzzzap' of little lightning bolts being sent around the chamber, from one beetle to the next.   It's quite the spectacle to see either how 'quiet' or 'chatty' a hive of Bolt Beetles are being.  When things are calm, a cavern of beetles might be nothing more than a few beams of light bouncing between a handful of beetles.  When there are intruders, dangers, or gods forbid one finds themselves among them during mating season, it's a maelstrom constant communication.   Bolt Beetles aren't nefarious creatures, but are inherently dangerous. being struck by their thought-zaps comparable to a sizeable electric shock. While it may take several discharges to be dangerous to a large creature, small critters must be wary of a Bolt Beetle colony. It is fascinating though to think that Bolt Beetles can literally 'think' their prey to death!

I love this idea. I particularly like the description of "god forbid one finds themselves among them during mating season..." (I can picture that soooo well!) and the addition that they "think" their prey to death! Way cool!
