Fort Carlisle

Fort Carlisle is a fortified township located in an area where the Commune River meets the Warde River, located in the Duchy of Selvirasi in Aldevaria. Fort Carlisle serves as the regional bulwark for Slimfalls, but it is the third largest settlement in Selvirasi, bridging Selvirasi with Bemedia.

Government

The leading figure in Fort Carlisle is Border Captain Laurents Léyalo. He takes care of the day to day affairs in and around the fort.

Defences

Though the settlement itself is not well defended, the fort has walls and moats as exterior protections when there is a need for them. Archer towers are also scattered among the walls to provide long range defensive measures against any oncoming armies.

History

During the Era of Grief around 364 AD, Fort Carlisle was a castle-town that was occupied by Lord Delcort. It consisted of the lord's Manor, an Inn, and a couple of homes. The rest was encampments that were utilized by the Selvirasi Army. Duke Ludius would utilize Fort Carlisle as a meeting ground for the Southern Alliance during the Age of Warlords. On one occasion, Ludius had gathered the militaristic leaders of the Alliance, Ilmenor the Black Knight, Commander Arthelyr, and Yalver Erithur, and had proclaimed war for the crown, with each leader now focusing on the war effort. This conflict would become known as the War of Lords, against the developing Northern Faction, the remaining Imperial Royal Army, and eventually, the Naga'Thus Raiding Parties.

Following his ascend to dukeship, Ludius would gather the Southern Alliance again at Fort Carlisle, to discuss the future of the alliance, as well as, solidify their bond. But at this time, Constantinor, Ludius' exiled brother had returned to Aldevaria, to usurp his brother's throne. In doing so, he employed the Windbreaker Family, sabotaged the ascetion in Slimfalls, and attempted to foil the meeting in Fort Carlisle. A spy of the Alliance would investigate the Family in Fort Carlisle, as well as, attend to the delegates of the Alliance. With the help of their friends, they are able to uncover the plot to assassinate the Duke with poisoning. Once the Windbreaker agents were dealt with, the Alliance made it a priority to cure Ludius of his severe poisoning. The meeting in Fort Carlisle was interrupted, and Ludius would be taken to the Arcane Healers from Marrowfield Bluffs.

During the Third Chancellorship in the 16th century, the town of Carlisle was an active settlement, being ruled by Lord Aernic. It had a rivalry with Wildriver Crossing. It was neighbored by several settlements, including Gladebarding in the west, Slimfalls in the east, and Mastwar Keep in the south.

During the last Death March of 1625, the ruins of Fort Carlisle were occupied by a local Mercenary group. Regardless, Fort Carlisle would play a pivotal in the defence of the kingdom, serving as Selvirasi's regional bulwark. It was used by the Aldevarian Royal Army as their defense in the greater Bemedian wilderness, against the Naga and Kaer'Ist, should they invade the area. Should the hordes of the Kaer'Ist gain control over Fort Carlisle, it would have left Slimfalls in a rather compromised position.

Geography

Fort Carlisle is located in the Western mountains of Selvirasi, where the Commune River meets the River Warde. Carlisle takes the traditional Selvirasi stronghold layout, with a large courtyard in the center, and the main building on the other side of the entrance. But Fort Carlisle is more than a fort. Carlisle Keep is used by a lesser count, who is well-revered in their home. Outside of the Carlisle Walls, is several encampments and minor buildings created by the travelers moving between the major cities. These buildings are located on the road between the two rivers. Dirk's Inn was an inn that operated out of Fort Carlisle. East of Carlisle Town is an encampment where several groups such as the Beasthunters and Selvirasi Faculty of Geology would operate in Fort Carlisle. The land itself houses various resources, prompting several settlements to be built around the area, including Wildriver Crossing and Amplestead.
