The Marsh

The Marsh is one of the 10 districts of the city of Coromare. It is the newest distrct, incorporated into the city's lands in XXX GE. The district is divided into 27 wards.   The district is situated in the south-easternmost corner of the city. It is bordered to the north by Dockside, to the east by the Makeyan Sea, to the south by the city walls and the Marshgate, and to the west by Castle Garden. Constructed over a saltwater marsh, the streets are plagued by rising seawater and frequent flooding despite extensive planning. It is the only district whose streets are laid out in a grid.  

Geography

The Marsh district covers XXX square miles in Coromare. It is the XX largest/smallest district in terms of area.  

Demographics

The population of the Marsh is approximately XXX, and growing.   The stereotypical Marshlander is a Calan from middle or upper-class origins who abandoned their family and wealth for artistic pursuits. While this applies to a large portion of the population, there are also many immigrant communities that have settled in the district. In particular, there is a significant Charyan population.  

History

  Until XXX GE, the lands to the southeast of the city were occupied by a saltwater marsh, and largely uninhabited. Due to constant flooding and unstable ground, few settled in the area permanently. The land historically belonged to the Mireu family, whose estate sat on firmer ground at the marsh's westernmost edge. The lands were sold to the Crown in XXX GE to accommodate the influx of residents after the Sheeric Uprising.  

Architecture

The architecture of the Marsh trends towards the Charyan style due to the concentration of immigrants. These single-story buildings are typically constructed entirely of wood, with delicate carvings around the frames of doors and windows, in contrast to the cob and wood buildings common to the rest of the city.
