Arcan Lights

On the clearest nights of the year, lights dance above and around the clouds, leaving a strange smell and a crackle of magic in the air. You humans call this the Aurora Borealis, to us it is known as the Arcan Lights. This rare phenomenon has been recorded as far back as any indications of written language have existed, and they have create the same mystique and wonder throughout the centuries.   Its as if ribbons of light dance through the air, slowly winding their way back and forth in brilliant colors. Greens and blues are the most likely colors, but purple red and pink have also been recorded. They are thin, almost spectral bands that cause no harm or barrier if flown through. It is unknown exactly why this phenomenon happens, but there has been study possibly attributing this to the reaction between the main magic force creating our magical borders and untethered atmospheric magic. It is known that a similar glowing light appears when two individual's magical forces interact. Despite not knowing the cause, we are able to predict when these lights will appear within a few hours accuracy. Levels of certain compounds in the air spike before these lights appear, a difference that is detectable by specialized instruments. The lights get their name from a researcher who first discovered the detectable difference in compounds, and had kept a record of every night the lights had appeared for decades. Arcan has since retired, but they have made a lasting contribution to the understanding of our world.   In cities, its is not unsurprising to see parks full of dragons out to view the lights. Families, piled together on blankets and young dragons hovering above the tree line, all captivated by the slow turn of the glowing bands.   Folklore created stories about these lights, tales spun to explain an unknown world. Some groups believed that these lights were the left over fire from the extinguished moon who burned as bright as the sun before reaching its magical capacity and went out. other believe it was another life force, a living being. And yet others believed it to be the spirits of their lost loved ones, dancing to remind them of their comforting presence. Whatever you may believe, these lights are a thing of beauty.

I loved reading your dragons' perspective on the northern lights. If any natural phenomenon on Earth had a magical origin, it should be the auroras.

I hope you don't mind, but I've been looking at other articles in your world, and so far I'm really enjoying what I've found. Icewing especially resonates with me. I wish there were more characters like her!

(Just one thing to add, and that would be credits for those beautiful photographs, even if you took them yourself. It's site policy to be as fair to artists' work as to writers'.)

All you need to do is fill out the "artist" line for an image, and the credit will appear under the photo. Go to your Images page and click on an image, and its info box should appear on the right. Put in the artist's name, and their credit will appear whenever you post the image on a page.
