Mermaids
Basic Information
Anatomy
Mermaids have the upper body of a human and the lower body of an aquatic animal (ex. fish, crustaceans, cephalopods, and some frogs, salamanders, and sea snakes). Most have two arms, although they have been known to have up to six. Their skin color and texture varies with species, as does the breathing device.
Genetics and Reproduction
Varies from species to species.
Ecology and Habitats
Ranges of lakes, rivers, streams, ponds, oceans, and seas.
Dietary Needs and Habits
Prey varies from habitat to habitat.
Additional Information
Facial characteristics
Most have rather large eyes, while average sized and larger have them front set. Smaller sizes typically have side-set eyes.
Geographic Origin and Distribution
Anywhere there is water
Average Intelligence
Smaller species are generally around the average fish, while average sized species lay around human-level. Larger species are said to house the knowledge of the universe, although they cannot communicate and are rarely seen.
Perception and Sensory Capabilities
Depending on species, they can have enhanced vision, hearing, echolocation, and other natural powers. Deep sea species may have bioluminescence, while crustacean-base species may have built-in armor on their skin. All have some semblance of residual magic from their first ancestors, which causes the species variation.
Genetic Ancestor(s)
Scientific Name
Homo aqua
Origin/Ancestry
African, but highly diluted and can share other features from different ethnic groups as well
Lifespan
1,000 years
Average Height
Can range from inches long, to over 2,000 feet (although they are incredibly rare). The average is between 5-20 feet long.
Average Physique
Depends on habitat. Those from the arctic and antarctic climates can have thick blubber, while others are slim and built for speed.
