The war for the reins

When it was discovered that the Gods could be bound and subsequently bent to the will of whomever held their reins war became inevitable.
Previously our people had been unified in common pursuit, but this much power tore deep division between us. As factions arose, united and fell, much of what we had made together in peace we rebuilt in hate to fight each other and in so doing destroyed.   It is in this age of darkness that we see the appearance of so many monsters which continue to plague the Underdark to this day. Previous theories for this was that such creatures had always been around, and were drawn out of hiding during the war where they gained a taste for Goblin flesh; however more recent experiments on magical residue has led to the theory that these monsters are the remnants of spells great spells, used and forgotten, left to feed on the dead and grow on the outskirts of civilisation, maybe mixed with the physical forms of creatures that ate the magical residue.

Notable figures of the conflict include:

Archibold the Mad, who upon gaining control of several God reins scattered them across the Underdark, effectively ending the conflict, leaving the Underdark in darkness and ruin, ushering in mass famine and removing all defences from the cities.   Teethnag of the Golden Sword, set on building a new shining capital he gave all his soldiers golden swords, this resulted in the defeat of his armies and loss of his God rein to Archibold. Additionally Sawticus a General of Teethnags court, fled with an army from the Capital and established the city state of Siricus before the defeat.   Malran the Magnificent, used his God rein to imbue himself with magic far beyond reasonable levels, eventually turning himself to a living crystal, and after casting many spells in defence of his territory a not so living crystal. He became a prominent fountain statue in Archibold the Mads palace.   Tiberion, Led the armies of Mor to defeat Climpen the Bad before succumbing to alcohol poisoning at the victory parade.
