Backstory

The Yinfiel family, settled outside of Port Llast, were well known for practicing the dark arts. Paying customers would be provided with charms, potions, and ritual services. The Yinfiel’s practiced everything from malicious charms to necromancy. Customers from all over would seek their services to curse people they were jealous of or try to bring back their dead relatives, or even rid items or houses of unwanted monsters and spirits.   Yves grew up in the family’s manor as an only child among her parents and many aunts and uncles. She was a very lonely child and would often turn to making up her own games and friends to play with. Ever since she could remember, Yves had an imaginary friend - a nothic - which she named Egg. She would spend hours playing with Egg and he would comfort her when she was upset.   One dark night at the Yinfiel manor, when Yves was 12 years old, a husband and wife came for exorcism services. The husband was possessed by a wraith, the undead form swirling out of his body. Yves' family immediately took the husband and wife to their ritual room and began trying to cleanse the man.
Egg
Ever curious, Yves eavesdropped and peeked into the ritual room. The ceremony started off as usual until the man began to levitate off the table. Horrible, red lightning light flashed out of his chest and the whole room shook with tremendous energy. A terrible, unhuman voice started chanting. Her family dropped one by one to their knees, coughing on their own blood as their energy seemed to be sucked inward towards the man on the table. Yves watched as every person in the room quickly dropped dead.   A black, undead, fog like body with red eyes rose from the man's body and began floating towards the door. Yves tried to run away but was frozen in terror. The door flew open and the wraith reached out an inky hand into Yves chest. She felt her soul being squeezed and drained. Yves watched as her own hands turned pale and her hair turn white. Exhaustion came over her and she felt her will to live falter.   Suddenly, Egg appeared in front of her and his body started shaking and quaking. Egg grabbed the wraith and Yves watched as Egg exploded in a bright green light. The wraith screeched and it's hand retracted from Yves's body. The wraith dissipated into a bright flash of light. Yves collapsed to the floor, bleeding out. The bright green remants of Egg's energy floated down into Yves chest, filing the gap of her missing soul.   Yves felt Egg’s psionic powers flow through her and knew she would never have to experience terror like that again. Though she couldn't see him, Egg was truly never gone. Yves took what she could from the manor - her belongings, trinkets, and all the family funds - and set out on her own. She fled her hometown in fears that she would be blamed for her family's death.   Shortly after, Yves was found wandering the streets of Neverwinter and was lured into a temple of Helm by the cult members at Helm's Hold with promises of food and shelter. She lived there for about two years under the guidance of the clerics and priests. They quickly sensed the undead energy in her and committed numerous extensive excorcisms on her. One session left her with a scorch mark on her sternum that she later covered up with her line tattoo. She wasn't treated well and the experience left her with a disdain for the divine. She stole some items and money from the temple and fled in the night to the next town.   Yves took up the lifestyle of a monster hunter mercenary and started traveling around, helping others to the best of her ability to try to distract from the darkness that still grips her soul. Yves gained experience hunting banshees, zombies, specters and the like.   Eventually, Yves would want to start an official dark arts supply company just like her family had and continue the Yinfiel name.

Yves's Nomadic Life

While traveling as a mercenary monster hunter, Yves had many adventures and experiences.
  • Yves inadvertently saved a governess of a town by reading people's minds out of boredom. Yves was at a summer solstice festival and the governess was in attendance amongst the townsfolk. Yves was sitting at a bench, drinking a whiskey and "people watching" (reading minds). After taking out the would be assassin, the governess gifted Yves the pocket watch (clockwork amulet magic item) she carries.
  • Yves worked for a year in a street-side talent show as a fortune teller. She would put on the theatrics with strange outfits, exotic teas, and burning candles. She would use her sorcery subtle magic to read her customer's minds to give them the fortune they were hoping to have.
  • Yves made her way in the poker realm by cheating. She made a lot of money and luckily got out before she was caught.
  • Yves got married "Waterdeep Wedding" style. Her travels brought her to Waterdeep during the new year celebration. She hit the bar with a couple of friends she made and met a man who had the prettiest eyes she'd ever seen. She married him at midnight at a roadside chapel and they spent the night together. The next morning she woke up and he was gone. She spent the next year tracking him down to get a divorce, regretting her decision making.
  • Yves learned her healing magic and bardic spells by following the famous bardic band, Arrowsmith. She'd spend her nights after shows watching the bards perform their magic and learn from them.

The Haunting of Yves

Yves is haunted by the events of her youth. She gets nightmares, and phantom pains where the wraith gripped her soul. In times of stress, Yves will feel something dark trying to pry its way out of her chest, but her psionic energy keeps it in. She doesn't know if it would be better to let the haunted energy loose or keep it inside.   Yves used to write her dreams down in a journal to try to make sense of them, but she abandoned that practice and instead took up drinking. She doesn't get piss drunk, but she will often take swigs from her flask to keep the jittery feeling in her chest at bay.   Yves feels tremendous amounts of survivors guilt from the incident in her family's manor all those years ago. She's pretty sure her family became wraiths and are still haunting her family home. She hasn't tried to go back.   Yves believes she doesn't have the capacity to be loved or fully accepted by others because her soul is corrupted. Because of this, she often feels very alone in the world and instead takes on a flirty personality to try to convince herself she is able to be close to other people. Yves believes if she dotes on others phyically and provides for them that she will feel closer to them.

Yves and Szilágyi

Yves and Szilágyi met about a year prior while taking a job together. There was a ghost terrorizing a town and the pair were hired seperately for the job. After successfully ridding the town of the ghost, the pair decided to combine their skills together to create a paranormal fighting duo. They've taken on several jobs, including banshees.   Szilágyi is a great liar, intense and prophetic. Szil and Yves have a business relationship - though Yves pushes Szil to be more open. Szil hates it when Yves uses her telepathic speech on her. Szilágyi was a member of the Kelemvor Clergy but was branded a heretic for practicing blood magic. Szil holds a grudge against her clergy for exiling her. Szil is dodgy when it comes to revealing how she erradicates undead. Yves simply thinks she is just a holy warrior.
