The Obscured

The giant gave her a reassuring smile as he knelt down and patted her on the shoulder. She had taken quite a tumble down the hill, and her arm and leg were twisted in uncomfortably unnatural angles. The thick grey mist was already creeping out of the ground and nearby stream, and he knew it would soon blanket the ground to his face. A quick survey of the nearby trees showed none large enough to bear his weight. And she was in no shape to climb.   "On my shoulders, little one. It's alright," he gently lifted her body from the ground as the mist swirled around and clung to his legs.   "Wha...?" delirious, she peered at her rescuer, pain and confusion muddling her mind.   "On my shoulders. Just like that. It's going to be alright." Again, his reassuring smile, resigned but glad.   Her vision faded, feeling unconsciousness taking her as a firm hand braced her back and held her up.   ~blink~   "On my shoulders, it's alright," his mantra repeated.   ~blink~   "On shoulder... alright," the voice was now muddled.   ~blink~   The dim light of morning broke through the treetops and burned away the mist on the forest floor. She jostled awake as her rescuer continued to plod through the forest, returning them to their home and to safety.   "We... we made it," she exclaimed weakly.   "Onsho..." mumbled the form carrying her.   She climbed down, the giant's docile hands offering no resistance and accepting her guidance.   She looked up at the face, nearly 5 feet above hers. He peered blankly into the distance and stood dumbly.   "C-can you hear me?" her lip quivered and her eyes shone.   "Onsho..."   She looked down and bit her lip, stifling her tears for the moment. The two of them were still in the wilderness and he would need help getting back to the safety of the village.   She looked up and smiled reassuringly at a face that would no longer return eye contact. "Come on, let's go home," she reached up and took one of his fingers and began leading him away.   "Onsho alra... onsho alra."
