Eladrin

Eladrin are strange and alien masters of the worldly magics of Law and Names. Their capriciousness is legendary, and they are greatly feared even by their only consistent "allies", the Humans .

Basic Information

Anatomy

Eladrin are bi-pedal humanoid creatures who superficially resemble impossibly beautiful elves.

Biological Traits

Forms

Eladrin shift between four major forms within two subspecies during a timed process that seems random to onlookers who only understand linear time. Eladrin will shift between the two subspecies several times throughout a given time period, but due to the Eladrin's very loose concepts of identity and names it is difficult for other races to track and understand what constitutes a "single" Eladrin.   The eight groups superficially resemble and are named after the four seasons and the four suits of cards. An Eladrin in seasonal form will take on aspects and personalities culturally significant to the common seasonal "spirit" of that season. For example, Winter Eladrin typically take on morose personalities and tend to have snow-white outfits and hairstyles.   The standard deviation of personalities between Eladrin of Hearts, Clubs, Diamonds, and Spades is significantly less than Seasonal Eladrin but still noticeable.

Gender

Eladrin are unanimously Androgynous, though the species adopts the titles of gendered- human nobility such as "Lord" or "Lady". They sometimes dress in fashions that highlight traditional humanoid expectations of feminine or masculine features, but even then it is difficult to discern between a male or female Eladrin.

Additional Information

Social Structure

Impossible to dissect and seemingly random. For example, a single Eladrin will claim to be a servant one day and then be crowned "King of Fallen Rivers" the next. Eladrin Courts are notoriously labyrinthine and many would-be thieves find themselves swept into the conspiracy-ridden and impossible worlds of the Eladrin Courts.

Facial characteristics

Eladrin physical features are always delicate and beautiful, and indeed it is difficult to describe a particular Eladrin's features without blushing and bursting into spontaneous song or poetry.

Geographic Origin and Distribution

Eladrin dwell almost exclusively in the Fey Courts and Human Settlements.   A very small sub-population (less than .01%) become adventurers, though this is exclusively made up of Eladrin who have lost a significant wager to a Manasupatra and thus are without their memories.

Civilization and Culture

Naming Traditions

Eladrin always refer to themselves with any myriad of noble titles in the language of whoever they are addressing. Their name states are difficult to pronounce but give the listener the impression of a musical piece, complete with a notative key.   "Lady Buinvi'A'Elrostrum'Recarosta'Guintelonestaranon'Elseterestetarum of the First Drop of Rain in Summer in A minor"

Beauty Ideals

Impossible, extending into the metaphysical realm beyond that of mortal understanding.

Common Dress Code

Eladrin fashion is magical and always based in undiscovered mathematics- they take the time to sew clothing into their skin with yarn made from the threads of fate.

Common Taboos

Breaking any law.

History

Lawkeeper Inheritance

The common Eladrin myth is that the first Eladrin were born with the stolen gifts of nobility clenched in their tiny fist.   Regardless of the veracity of this myth, Eladrin remain the most powerful users of Law-magick in Centras, and remain unbound and unbothered by their Lawkeeper ancestors.

The Human Alliance

During the Age of Broken Twigs, when Elves swept over the other sentient races to crush them beneath their heels, an Eladrin Emperor offered a game of chance to a human beggar. The beggar lost, and their name has indeed been erased from time, but since that day Eladrin Lawmages have been at the beck and call of human royalty. Eladrins are constantly bemused by human affairs and seem especially befuddled by the concepts of disease, mortality, and human poverty.   With the help of the Eladrin (who don't have soldiers, but offered secret enchantments to human war-smiths) and the Canitaurs , humans finally pushed back against elven rule. (At least according to human historians. Elven historians maintain that elven soldiers became bored and eventually just returned back to the elven forests).   Today, Eladrin continue to offer the services of their Lawmages and many populous settlements are carefully guarded by law-magic. Humans remain skeptical and use this service sparingly, as Eladrin law-magic tends towards violent and explosive results for those that violate the law. For example, criminals might simply expand until their skin tears and organs fail, or they may find themselves in a ghost-state whereupon they are unable to interact with the world around them.
