Yorgen wants to connect with his antagonistic siblings who have always harassed and shut him out. At his wits end and fed up with their antics, he decides to become strong enough to stand up to them and to perform such heroic actions in his position as captain of the Western Watch that they will have to acknowledge him. With such self centered and loosely focused ideas in his head, he fails to resolve the conflict with the Outsiders as he had planned and even gets his own men killed at one point. His second in command reprimands him and calls out his foolishness. Yorgen ruminates on his failures and resolves to do what his heart and conscious has been screaming at him to do. He casts aside his own goals and answers his duties as a military leader and a ruler over the people with his full effort, working and practically living to serve and protect those around him.
This newly disciplined Yorgen is confronted by his older brother and he is forced to fight. Casting aside his weapons, magic, and helmet, he calls out to his brother with full clarity about his feelings and desire to simply be a family. Being beaten the ground multiple times, Yorgen continues to spill out his sorrows and hopes that begin to crack his brother's cold exterior. Too worn out to move, Yorgen lays on the ground still begging with his minuscule breath for his brother's acceptance. Soldiers that serve both the certain court interests aligned against Yorgen and under loan to his brother come to try and stage the death of Yorgen as self-defense against the captain of the Western Watch, in an attempt to remove him from the equation for good. Even though his brother orders them not to touch him, they proceed to apprehend him and their leader goes to distract and manipulate his brother. Realizing just how much misdirection and honeyed words he fell victim to over his life, Yorgen's brother raises his sword for the sake of his neglected sibling. The brothers stand united and hold the line in battle and winning the day.
After reconciling with his older brother, Yorgen is haunted by the dying words of an Elf and reports from his scouts about a coming invasion. Seeing that the people and military remain split and unprepared, his new goal is to set up a force that is ready to stand against the coming war. This involves rallying support among the noble houses that he has been completely alien to his whole life.
