Rindu Home Life

Rinduvians hail from the northern gate of Polaris, and are a people of the skies - they use their Ripple Magic to fly through their home caverns, the Vindhya caverns. These caverns are completely covered in water, with sheer cliffs on the sides of the water making it impossible to settle normally. Instead, the Rinduvians have built their homes on the sides of the cliffs and on stalagmites. They enjoy a unique ability which humans have desired since the dawn of time - flight. They are nomadic in nature, as children were raised collectively and trained in the ways of the Ripple. The Ripple allows Rinduvians to alter the ripples of the universe, manipulating air and water to their will.   The Rinduvians live comfortably off of a pescetarian diet, making use of their water magic to catch fish with ease. They have a complex farming system, forming terraces in the sides of the walls to grow rice, grains, and various spices. They have one of the most robust traditions in food, having dedicated sheds in the temples who prepare meals, and young monks are appointed as delivery boys to transport food to the rest of the temple’s monks.   One thing to understand is that these temples are entire cities in their own right. Even though they function as religious grounds, they hold hundreds if not thousands of people. Their complex, vertical alleyways come with the same intricacies of any city. In Rindu, there is a powerful caste system known as the Cycle. Each person is assigned a role at birth determined by the actions of their last reincarnation. This is done by offering the infant a series of Ripple Crystals, known as the Cycle Stones. The deep roots of Rindu’s religion is to achieve true freedom by escaping the cycle of reincarnation by accessing the final Cycle Stone, the Moksha Stone. Every caste has a certain number of Stones in the offering. These are all the stones of the Cycle:
  • Outcastes. Those who choose the Kama Stone (20). This stone represents earthly desire, and an unwillingness to let go of the human form and break the reincarnation cycle. They are restricted to the poorest parts of the temple, serving menial jobs deemed too lowly for the more enlightened. Their colors are yellow and purple.
  • Wingless. Those who choose the Artha Stone (45). This stone represents earthly survival, such as the pursuit of prosperity and safety. They are the laborers of this world, who make enough to support themselves and their families. Their colors are white and black.
  • Sangha. Those who choose the Dharma Stone (35). This stone represents spiritual duties, such as the following of laws and religious duties. They are respected members of society, working as merchants and farmers. They also are allowed to fly between temples, unlike lower castes. Their colors are orange and red.
  • Abbot. Those who chose the Moksha Stone (1). This stone represents freedom, the release from the cycle of reincarnation. They are the leaders of temples, religious and political figures of high importance. Once they die, they are believed to break free from the cycle and never return to this world. Their colors are blue & green, and their symbol is the Peafowl.
The deep roots of the caste, tied directly to the spiritual beliefs of reincarnation, has created a deeply biased society. That bias is based on the belief that everyone gets another chance in their next cycle. However, those in the very lowest caste have recently begun to fight against these standards, as they learn more about life in Polaris - a city without castes.   Rindu does not have a central government which does trading with Polaris. Instead, individual merchants set up shop in the city and deliver their spices and goods. This makes for some of the biggest bazaars in Polaris, huge shops selling spices, fresh seafood, and of course the Ripple Crystals, which are amongst the most accessible of the foreign magics.
