The Ossuary Cliffs: Creation's Edge

The Ossuary Cliffs, also known as Creation's Edge, form the colossal skeletal boundary encasing the world of Cardinal. Composed of the calcified remains of the primordial entity known as Creation, these cliffs rise from the ocean's depths and curve towards the heavens. Steeped in mystery and legend, the Ossuary Cliffs cast a shadow over the known world.

Origins and Composition

The Ossuary Cliffs are not merely a natural formation but the remnants of Creation itself. According to ancient lore, Cardinal was formed within the skull of this primordial being, its bones forming the towering cliffs that define the world's edge. The cliffs' composition is an intricate lattice of ancient, calcified bone, seamlessly fused into a formidable barrier resistant to natural weathering and erosion, due to the residual magic of Creation that still permeates them.

Cultural and Historical Significance

To the people of Cardinal, the Ossuary Cliffs are a natural wonder. Representing an insurmountable challenge, they are a place of exploration and mystery. The cliffs are seen as guardians of the world's boundaries and a testament to the ancient past. Many legends tell of those who attempted to scale the cliffs, though none have returned to share their tales.

Geographical Impact and Ecosystems

The Ossuary Cliffs significantly impact Cardinal's climate and geography. The waters near the cliffs can become dangerously aggressive, with turbulent waves and powerful currents making navigation treacherous. The cliffs also create unique weather patterns, often shrouded in dense mist and fog. Despite these harsh conditions, various unique species have adapted to life on the cliffs, clinging to the ancient bones and thriving in the crevices. The cliffs' high altitudes and steep inclines support diverse flora and fauna, from bioluminescent fungi to avian species nesting in the heights.

Myths and Legends

Many legends surround the Ossuary Cliffs, with the tale of a mystical gateway being the most prevalent. Sailors share stories of a hidden entrance within the cliffs leading to another realm of great power and ancient secrets. There are also whispers of monstrous creatures dwelling at the top, guarding the unknown and preventing any from returning.

Exploration and Expeditions

The allure of the Ossuary Cliffs has drawn countless adventurers, but harsh conditions and natural dangers have ensured that no known expedition has succeeded. The area is often called the "Point of No Return," where those who venture too far are never seen again. The cliffs' sheer height, treacherous weather, and aggressive marine life create an almost impenetrable barrier. Notable expeditions include the ill-fated journey of the "Wandering Star," a ship that vanished near the cliffs with all hands lost. Stories of ghostly apparitions and eerie lights are attributed to the spirits of those who perished attempting to conquer the cliffs.

Magical and Mystical Properties

The Ossuary Cliffs are believed to hold immense magical properties, though these remain speculative due to the lack of successful explorations. Some legends suggest the cliffs are imbued with Creation's essence, influencing the natural world in mysterious ways. The persistent mist, unpredictable weather, and aggressive waters contribute to the cliffs' mysticism. Scholars theorize that the cliffs may act as a conduit for ancient magical energies, supported by observed phenomena such as sudden weather shifts, inexplicable disappearances, and irregular time behavior.

Historical Context and Notable Events

Throughout history, the Ossuary Cliffs have been the site of significant events. Ancient texts describe rituals by early civilizations at the cliffs' base, seeking to commune with the spirits of Creation for prosperity and protection. More recently, the "Bone Wars" were fought over the cliffs' valuable resources, with factions vying for control, believing the bones held untold power and wealth. These wars left ruins and artifacts scattered along the cliffs.
