Engaelsphyzos

Engaelsphyzos is the capital city of Terra Consortium, located in the Corveu province on the east coast of Ephon. It possesses a portal to Conclave on Daşarath in the outskirts. The city extends from the mainland to an island about a mile out on the ocean; the "mainland sector" contains a downtown and uptown area that serves as the main trading hub and apartment complex, while the "seafront sector" contains weather stations, thaetrium power generators, factories, and industrial seaports. Engaelsphyzos is one of the oldest cities on Terra that is still inhabited, and some ancient ruins of the old city still remain unearthed beneath. Sometimes, strange beasts called "gleaners" stalk the barren corners of the city at night, rumored to be from the forgotten underground sections of the city. Criminals sometimes use these creatures to carry away dead bodies for unknown purposes.

Government

Engaelsphyzos, like most other cities in Terra Consortium, is run by a mayor-council municipal government elected by local citizens. The council is responsible for local legislation of bylaws, while the mayor acts as a city representative, and has some ability to veto council decisions. The city also contains the capital administration for the rest of Terra Consortium, where the president and federal assembly resides.

Defences

Some old city walls still remain standing in the outskirts of the city, with the tallest measuring about 25 feet high. The airspace is patrolled by police and Terran Sky Brigade drones that communicate through officers on central airships. This is usually to identify and direct incoming sky-vessels for landing.

Industry & Trade

Lumber from forestry across the nation is brought to a trade section of the airport around the portal to Conclave. Grains, meat, and milk from the farms across the outskirts feed the city and also supply a Serethian market for niche foodstuffs. The city itself does not supply much else in the way of raw materials, but has a wide range of locally-made products, from arts and crafts to more high-tech machinery.

Infrastructure

On the outskirts of town lies a massive airport situated next to the portal to Conclave. The rest of that area is mostly just farmland. The city itself has many living quarters and merchant plazas throughout the mainland sector, an uptown and downtown area. The administrative district of mainland sector contains the Sanguinary Palace, which served as the emperor's palace when the Carcid Empire still existed. Now, the Sanguinary Palace serves as the president's living quarters and workplace, as well as the place where the federal assembly meets. The seafront sector is about a mile out on the ocean from the mainland sector, connected by the Etzalom Bridge; the seafront sector contains massive towers that act as lightning rods that conduct electricity to the thaetrium power generators, causing the magical essence to shoot across a grid of underground wires to power auxiliary functions in buildings across the rest of the city, using the Etzalom Bridge. The weather stations of seafront sector use limited weather control and measuring equipment to ensure maximum input of electricity, making the island nearly constant with stormy weather, only changing to clear skies when ships are scheduled to dock. Seafront sector also contains many factories, industrial sites, and ports that benefit from direct energy access. Ancient ruins of the old Engaelsphyzos, yet to be excavated, remain scattered underground, with few and largely unknown entryways dotting the hidden corners of the city. Experimental buildings that were once intended to channel energy the way seafront sector's do now are mostly wrecked and abandoned, with squatters taking residence and occasionally salvaging pieces of what remains.

History

The city was initially founded in 222 IC by a Carcid warlord named Pythes the Bewitched, a colonial conqueror that was largely independent from the Carcid Empire itself. Pythes subjugated the Corephian (Corvirian) human tribes, and with his slaves he built a city to honor the tempest goddess, Xylamphae, a pagan deity worshiped by the Carcids long before they discovered Vyzon. The name "Engaelsphyzos" translates to "Storm's Reach" in ancient Carcidelic. The city was eventually taken from Pythes' descendants in the Great Carcid Civil War in 376 IC by Ozemathias VI's army, ending the war with the transition of the Carcid Empire's capital to the newly conquered Engaelsphyzos.   In 3500 IC, the 4th Insurrection ended with the Siege of Engaelsphyzos. The Insurgents occupied the Sanguinary Palace and held the Great Psychic Debate to decide the fate of the new nation, with Árman Selik being voted as the first president of Terra Consortium. Engaelsphyzos remains the capital of Terra Consortium.

Architecture

Mostly steel and concrete, with copper being used as antennae for seafront sector's lightning towers. The more modern buildings of Engaelsphyzos are generally thin, soaring towers of prismatic shapes. Older buildings have a more rounded shape, and are made of stone bricks and marble.

Geography

Engaelsphyzos is built upon a small peninsula, and has some beaches along the coast for recreational use, though they are mostly rocky. The East Ephon Ocean is accessible from nearly every part of the city. Further inland in the city outskirts is mostly made up of farms, grassland, and deciduous forests.
