City Laws

While the laws may differ slightly from city to city, in general these are the assumed laws of any city or large town. The laws of smaller settlements may differ entirely, or not enforced to the same degree as city rules. The suggestions here are the maximum expected punishment for a crime, so most common punishments tend to be lesser than those listed.

Beyond the death penalty, hard labour is considered the worst punishment - it consists of back breaking, soul breaking work most often in a mine, as a dock worker or as a construction worker. Even the most hardened criminals would prefer imprisonment to hard labour and will often try to get their punishment switched to imprisonment instead.

Those who are unable to pay their fine may be given the option to pay it in installments while kept in a 'probation' state, however more dangerous criminals or serious crimes may result in hard labour until the total amount is worked off. While in probation, a criminal must report weekly to the guard captain with evidence of their where abouts and activity. Should someone on probation commit another crime and get caught they will find themselves facing the newest charges first, then pay off the rest of their fines in hard labour.
