The Airborne Odyssey

The ornate gangplank did little to distract from the fact that between himself and the ground was an expanse of one-hundred feet of air. He tentativly made his way on board the ship, feeling a lot more secure once he was on the deck. It felt more familiar here; stairs to the galley, the foredeck full of people waiting to depart, waving to loved ones off the rails. His eyes looked to the tethers rising up through the deck of the ship. Thick, braided ropes so large he couldn't wrap his hands around them rose into the air, vanishing around the edges of the gigantic balloon. He inhaled sharply as he tried to maintain his composure. A smart-looking gnome, his dark grey cloak offset by the vibrant green of his eyes approached the man. "My King! I'm so glad you could make it!" said the gnome. "Orryn, I'm," started the King, pausing to find words to mask his nerves, "I'm so very glad you invited me. I wouldn't have missed it."   "Passengers, On behalf of the Greylock Company and Orryn Greylock, I would like to you all aboard the Airborne Odyssey for her maiden voyage. Please brace yourselves, for we are now departing." The King's knees buckled slighty as the deck rose beneath him; his trembling hands making it difficult to gain purchase on a nearby support rail. "So Orryn, how long did you say this flight was?"

Propulsion

The Odyssey has both vertical and horizontal propulsion.

Vertical Propulsion

The Odyssey has a large balloon that is filled with heated air. The air is headed below deck and pumped through insulated tubes into the balloon. The temperature of the air is constantly monitored to ensure the craft maintains a steady height.

Horizontal Propulsion

The Odyssey has wings, much akin to sails on a ship, that capture the wind to control the speed of the craft. The wings are controlled from the pilothouse. Even with small amounts of wind, the ship seems to be able to maintain a decent heading.   The Odyssey has a large fin at the stern that controls the heading of the ship.

Weapons & Armament

The Odyssey has no weapons or armament.

Armor and defense

The Odyssey has a flame retardant coating on the hull of the ship, and all windows are reinforced to protect against birds flying into them. The balloon is surrounded by a reinforced mesh that protects from projectiles, including weaponry.

Communication Tools & Systems

The airship has a large network of pipes that are used to communicate around the vessel. The Pilothouse and Furnace Room are in constant communication. The Pilothouse can also speak directly to the concierge desk.
