War of the Necrochanglings: The First assault

The Conflict

Prelude

For years the evil necromancer Herbert West, who was brought to the world of Blomaria by an interdimensional portal, has been plotting a brutal revolution by means of enormous armies of Necrochanglings. Kidnapping numerous people throughout the world and turning them into Necrochanglings with the Necrochanging Disease, he finally settled on Budston for being his first target, one of the smallest countries in Blomaria.

Deployment

Herbert West dispatched several lackeys throughout the country to gather intel and potential new undead thralls to use for conquest. He had a certain clan with lycantropic necrochanging abilities take care of the Southeastern side of Budston, with the settlements of Budtown Forlage and Forubort as its most important assets.

In the north-eastern side, Herbert West gathered a group of particularly ruthless bandits around to assault Meenee, Seqoira and Tufftown.

North west, a very small force was dispatched to assail Shrubsen, Twigser and Redtree. It is speculated that West was informed of a possibly enormous threat being situated in one of the settlements and therefore decided to begin a more undercover assault.

Finally, the south-western side was the most important, housing Seedonia, Dunough and finally the country's capital, Circana. The brunt of the forces was led here, led by Herbert West's righthand man, Ragnar Bloodgrate.

Battlefield

West ordered his lackeys to attack simultaneously and unexpectedly, leaving large parts of the country completely surprised and vulnerable. With West pulling the strings from an unknown place somewhere in Budston, the armies spreaded out through Budston. Originating from the most central point in Budston, one of the many dwarven mines under the Twisted Mountains.

The first battles of the southeast would take place in Forlage itself, with many lycantropics besieging the Crimson Walls of the town. After which they would split, taking the brunt of force to Forubort and a small portion to Budtown. They suspected that Budtown was largely undefended.

Then the northeast, with more challenging terrain. Herbert directed the bandits to move fast, but silent. Their objective was first to raze what was left of Meenee, and then to head through the Grandstream Woods, llosing the tracks of their enemies. Then, plunder Tufftown, take a rest in the surrounding woods before heading to besiege Seqoira.

The Northwest had a more complicated task. Due to the strange, but powerful force of power residing there, the armies were directed to first overthrow Twigser with powerful, but swift tactics and then silently head to Shrubsen, skipping Redtree. Redtree is the town most close to this forest, and likely to give the armies a hard time.
The southwest should be prepared for a hard fight. When emerging from the mountains, Dunough is about to be immediately overthrown by brute force courtesy of Ragnar's army. Then Seedonia is to be overthrown, and by that time, Circana is likely to be alerted and send out their best druidic forces. This is what the army has been waiting for, because the area between Circana and Seedonia is completely devoid of forestry. This will give the Necrochanglings a slight edge.

Conditions

There were of course, slight eventual setbacks Herbert had to take into account. The Blomarian Cult Extermination Brotherhood was ever present in Budston, despite the small importance of the country. They had outposts in Helmskeep and Forubort to the southeast, in Seqoira to the north east, in Twigser to the northwest and in Seedonia and Circana to the southwest. And it was unknown to West how many people were undercover members of the Brotherhood. All this led to a significant gamble on West's part to how much units he has to send out to each side of the country.
  • Is the Brotherhood prepared for the Necrochangling Cult?
  • Do they have sufficient defenses prepared?
  • And where will those be situated?
All these questions led to a relative uncertainty of West, and a perfect assault on Budston was nearly impossible.

The Engagement

In the southeast, the Necrochangling forces attacked swift and sudden at Forlage. The Queen's Guard there was wholly unprepared for several lycanthropes besieging their walls. The slaughter was enorm, and the town was almost defeated, were it not for a large number of Brotherhood members to attack the Necrochanglings from behind. They came from Helmskeep, transported from several locations by the sigil circle system the Brotherhood had linked. The siege ultimately lasted several weeks. Most of the time was spent by the Necrochanglings trying to take over Forlage, and the last four to five days were spent by the Brotherhood pummeling the evil forces. The lackeys of West and the leaders of the Necrochangling force escaped and are now unable to be found, but it is likely they still reside in the region.
The battle in the northeast was hampered by several things. For one, the bandits were hopelessly unorganized. They were all united under one goal, but Herbert West did not account for the bandits disregarding everything else. The bandits were not at all focused on contaminating people with the Necrochanging Disease, instead killing them outright. Villages like Meenee and Tufftown were plundered thoroughly, wasting precious time for the bandits to still be able to surprise attack Seqoira. Once they entered the forest inbetween Tufftown and Seqoira, they were mercilessly attacked by the warrior druids hailing from Seqoira. And thus, the army attacking the northeast was also defeated.

There was little fight in the northwest. The troops were expected in Twigser and were slaughtered by monks before they could even put up a fight. They ran and headed to Shrubsen. But just outside Redtree, they vanished and Herbert West has never received any word from them.. A different team got dispatched as emergency and went to Shrubsen first, originating from the northern Twisted Mountains. Their fate is so far unknown.

The greatest battle in Budston happened in the southwest. Here, the large forces led by Ragnar Bloodgrate met the joined forces of the Queen's Guard, The Brotherhood and the Briarhood of the Botanical Deities. For several weeks, the large amount of benevolent forces put up an amazing fight against the Necrochanglings. However, the Necrochanglings juts kept coming, and Ragnar was wreaking havoc in his Dragon form. But then, Húron, the brass dragon from the Circana Tower swooped into the fray and took care of the vast amount of Necrochanglings. He and Ragnar had a standoff before viciously mauling each other, until Húron had the upper hand and forced Ragnar out of his Dragon form. Then, Ragnar got stomped by the enormous feet of Húron. The battle of Circana was won by the forces of good, and with that, the Necrochanglings were defeated. For now, because Herbert West is still there...

Outcome

The Necrochangling forces were defeated, although they left considerable damage. Several settlements were plundered and sometimes even decimated. Forlage took huge damage from the siege and the Crimson Wall was weakened severely in some places.
The same happened to a small village to the north of Tufftown, that wasn't mapped anywhere, but the ruins were found when assessing damages in Tufftown. It seemed it was a secret tiefling village, and nobody was left alive.

Aftermath

The Circan Mages College took a huge hit because of the battle of Circana. Numerous students were drafted to take part in fighting the Necrochanglings, and due to bad preparation and overall inexperience with fighting, many died fighting. The same happened to many druids who were teachers at the college. And so, the Mages College continues to have a rougher time than usual teaching and attracting aspiring students.

Historical Significance

Legacy

The Necrochangling War ended only recently, so the true effect it will have on Budston is yet to be found out. However, the Brotherhood left a serious message to Budston about the importance of their presence.
Also, the town of Forlage made a considerable change due to the aftermath of the war. Baladna Fudina, whose parents were killed in the war, took it upon himself to change Forlage for the better. He became mayor and made several changes to the disposition of Forlage.

Strength

This side had numerous different strengths, all because of their separate backgrounds. The brotherhood had significant forces originating from Budston and countries beyond, thanks to a strong and well connected sigil system. These forces were well equipped to deal with cults, and specifically the undead kind.

They were assisted by the Briarhood of Botanical Deities in the battle of Circana. Here, the druids were the main force of the city, being conscripted for the battle from the Circan Mages College.
And finally, the Queen's Guard was present in almost every Budstonian settlement. This meant that the distribution did mean smaller numbers of forces from the Queen's Guard, and smaller settlements would be affected more by this.
They were well bestowed with Necrochangling powers, and leaders of individual squads had powerful forms they could transform into. Ragnar Bloodgrate can Change into a Red Dragon for example.

Casualties

The casualties were large on this side, despite their upper hand. Because they were not prepared for the Necrochanglings having the power to change into such powerful shapes, the Druids power to Wild Shape was insufficient among their lower ranks, and those were slaughtered mercilessly. The Queen's Guard also suffered major losses, due to knowledge of the Necrochanglings being sparse amongst them and they were not well equipped to deal with their attacks. Especially in the battles at the southeast region of Budston, the Queen's Guard was slaughtered, and Forlage suffered the brunt of it.
Nearly all of the Necrochanglings were defeated in the war, although there are some who could escape and hide.

Objectives

The Goal was simple: Defend Budston from the Necrochanging Cult and drive them out of the world forever. The Brotherhood was specifically fired up to take them out forever, for they recognized the potential destruction the cult could cause if they were to continue unhindered.
To overthrow the government of Budston and use the country as a stepping stone to conquer the entire world.
