Thomas relocates with his family to America. Joey crosses the Atlantic ocean and is first gripped by a fear of water.
Thomas committed murder at age 16. He killed his sister's husband who was an abusive alcoholic. He ran away after committing the crime, and changed his identity; living in fear of the punishment for his crime.
Joey is brought from another town back to Blackwell. The agents of the Circle try to sway him to officially commit to their cause. Joey does his best to remain neutral but untethered to the Circle and its clutches.
Joey switched for the third time in 5 years. The side effects, he soon discovered, were the remnants left behind of the souls that he had displaced. Voices that were not his own began to haunt his dreams. Visions started to take over his waking hours. A few years went by, and Joey was stark raving mad. Not sleeping, barely eating, and always hearing the voices.
A "John Doe" was picked up in Blackwell, dehydrated and out of his mind. He had no identification, and no relatives. He was taken to Slatefall Hospital for treatment. Records show that he died there in 1924.
After 10 years in the psych ward, Joey escaped Slatefall hospital in the body of Sam Walters; an orderly who worked there.
After hearing about her from reports on the incident, Joey made his way to the ruin of Van Allen Mansion to meet Elizabeth Van Allen.
The Great Depression was the worst economic downturn in US history. It began in 1929 and did not abate until the end of the 1930s. The stock market crash of October 1929 signaled the beginning of the Great Depression. By 1933, unemployment was at 25 percent and more than 5,000 banks had gone out of business.
At the start of World War II, before The United States was drawn into the conflict, Joey feared the growing power coming steadily closer. He fled to neutral Sweden and joined a traveling circus.
Joey's current form is aging, and he is constantly being followed by Madge, the Agent of Lust. Though it's always risky, Joey decides it's time to make another switch, and hopefully, lose Madge for good.
Twenty-six years after his last switch, Joey begins to feel death's icy grip creep up on him. Too close for comfort. Time to make a change. Another late-night party, another lonely outsider who likely won't be missed. Joey makes the switch. Have to buy more time.
It's time to set things right. Joey didn't know if he could do this himself, so he had to find someone worthy of the challenge. Now, to get in to the house and chat a bit with the locals.
