Wāhō Gravesite

The Wāhō gravesite is marked by a 7m high megalith that is standing in the centre. Various religious texts are engraved in it, to protect the dead and wishing them a restful afterlife and peace to their souls so they may return to earth (be reincarnated) if they wish to. A rope with feathers attached to it is wrapped around the upper part of the megalith. It is surrounded by fences with more feathers attached to them. Other fences have religious carpets draped over them. The entire site is surrounded by poles decorated with bones and the scarfs avian monks wear, to ward negative energies off the grounds.   The Wāhō gravesite is located about 55km to the west of the Kēakēa mountain range (the city of Kēakēa was named after the mountains), near the settlement of Rō on the highest mountain.

History

The gravesite was erected in the avian 16th century, shortly after the end of the Great Civil War (1495 - 1532) to honour the people who died in it, soldiers and civilians alike. It is protected and maintained by the temple in Rō. Each year in mid-winter a mass is held there to remember the history of the site. It is usually not open for tourists, in order to protect the peaceful energies surrounding it.
