Flaming Bear
The flaming bear (Ursus ignis) is a large bear native to Upper Agartha most notable for it's dark blue and black fur that is constantly wreathed in flames. It is very closely related to the brown bear, and is often believed to be a modified version of the species.
Basic Information
Anatomy
The flames released is highly variable in temperature, and changes based on stress and available energy. While the standard temperature for the flames is 400°C (752°F) at a standard orange color, it can get as low as 10°C (50°F), which shows itself as a light sky blue. There is no known upper limit for the temperature of the flames, but the average for an enraged flaming bear is 1,650°C (3000°F), at a deep violet color.
The flames of a flaming bear burns more energy than it can ever consume. It is unknown where the extra energy comes from.
Water does extinguish the flames, but this does not seem to bother the bear.
Genetics and Reproduction
Because of it's close relation to the brown bear, and by extention polar bear, the flaming bear can interbreed with either species with difficulty.
Ecology and Habitats
Flaming bears prefer temperate environments with plenty of woods and streams.
Dietary Needs and Habits
Flaming bears are omnivorous, and require a heavy diet to maintain their flames. They will occasionally directly fuel their flames with wood and branches found of the ground. Fossils fuels are also desirable, but are rarely found naturally.
Behaviour
Despite their appetites, flaming bears are rarely aggressive to humans unless they are desperate for a meal or threaten a mother's cubs. They are known to recognize and remember faces and can even form friendships in rare cases.
Female flaming bears will pick their mate based on the strength and brightness of their flames, which is often an indicator of health and virility.
