Defence of the Madame Colony

The defence of the Madame Colony was an early battle between the local lizardman tribes of the southern coast of the Alweald Swamplands and the newly arrived settlers encroaching upon their land for the fate of the colony.

The Conflict

Prelude

In 411 a group of refugees fled from their now forgotten homeland and settled down near the estuary of a river they called the Madame. They first thought themselves alone on this new continent, and for the first few months they were able to build up their settlement in relative peace. Only when the nomadic Dilo tribe passed through following their seasonal route did the Madame colonists finally met another culture in the area. During their first meeting relationships were cordial, with the Dilo tribesman allowing the settlers to build in the area and the settlers allowing the tribes man to scavenge and move through the area unopposed. But it was during the second year that conflict occurred when the Madame colonists had constructed a wall around their settlement, denying the Dilo tribe access to seasonal plants and animals that they lived on during that time of year. The Dilo tribe invoked an ancient accord with the other tribes in the area to defend each other's way of life, and a thousand lizardman began sieging the 100 colonists hiding behind the walls of their new settlement.

The Engagement

The lizardman tribes sieged the settlement for two weeks, throwing javelins and blasting powerful spells at the defenders and their palisades. At first the settlers responded by shooting arrows down upon the attackers, when those were gone they switched over to throwing anything heavy they could find and lift.   Once the town was nearly stripped bare one of the desperate survivors, a fisherman named Bert de Rog, loaded one of his fish upon his bow and shot it at the attacking lizardman. To his surprise the lizardman caught it in his mouth and seemed to enjoy it. Then he shot another fish at another lizardman who again caught it in his mouth. The other lizardman nearby seemed to be paying attention now, and beckoned at Bert for them to be next. Bert yelled at his fellow settlers to begin throwing food at the attackers, and being out of options they followed his lead. Slowly the lizardman stopped attacking and began gathering the food being thrown down before dispersing into the Alweald Swamplands. So the 50 remaining settlers managed to break free from the 1000 lizardman strong siege.

Aftermath

Having discovered a way to ward of the local lizardman anger, the settlers were able to life in relative peace with the Dilo tribe and were able to slowly build up their colony into what would one day become Madamsrest‎.

Historical Significance

Legacy

A century later, in 514, the Madamsresters had become populous enough to build up a powerful defensive military force. When the Dilo tribe come knocking once more for their share of food they were denied, and the Madamerest military force sullied out of the main gate to slaughter them before the Dilo could call upon their accord and repeat history. So it was that the Madamresters believed themselves free from the burden of giving food to the locals and had avenged themselves for the slaughter of 412. With the Dilo tribe out of the way and their meddle tested the military was able to push out the local tribes and establish new settlements such as Dienerdam.

Opting to shoot a fish is a new level of desperation that I have rarely seen. XD Granted, all the lizardmen wanted to start with it seemed was food, so it checks out that it'd make them happy to have it. It sounds like it turned into a sort of yearly tithing - unfortunate the lizardmen didn't realize how big the settlement was growing overtime so they couldn't forsee the place eventually telling them to 'move along' and actually fight back.   Neat little conflict. :3
