Sinclair Peninsula

The homeland of the Sinclair Clan after their second exodus. The peninsula is in fact several hundred miles across and is the north-eastern edge of the Land of Sun and Snow. It is a fairly fertile land considering it’s covered in snow for five months a year and often soaked in cold rain the rest.

Geography

The area called the peninsula actually starts several hundred miles away from the coast. Along the north western side is the Whale Tomb mountain range and to the south eastern side runs the Jagged Tooth mountain range which curls inland about halfway along its length (north to south.) The mountains flank the land, causing the area to be a sort of enormous valley. The far north eastern end is mostly pebbly shores running into the cold Free Whale Sea.

The land in the peninsula is mostly hills covered in grass or forest. In between some of the higher hills lochs form and some ancient people have cut wide channels between them to create a canal system. The channels are connected to other lochs in the rest of the Land of Sun and Snow. When the Sinclairs first landed the Ross clan destroyed the connecting channels to prevent an army being transported by boat. The Second Sinclair Empire later repaired them.

The landscape flattens out towards the coast and about seventy percent of the people live there. The flat land has mostly been converted into farmland for crops and livestock. The rich waters off the coast also support a large fishing business and the easy to access beaches make trade with the North Isles common.

Fauna & Flora

The Whale Tomb mountain range is home to many fearsome beasts, including even a few Sky Dragons. Most of the beasts live on the north side of the mountains and feed off the whale carcasses that are washed up to the foot of the mountains by the currents. The Jagged Tooth mountains have less and weaker beasts than the north but Common Wyverns still cause problems for shepherds in the area.

The land between the mountains has less dangerous wildlife like wolves and deer. Brown bears live in some of the larger forests but they rarely venture out. Much of the wildlife on the more open hills are domesticated animals. Given how useful wool is in the cold winter, most rural communities have a few sheep. Wild horses can sometimes be seen roaming the peninsula but they are very clever and skilled at avoiding humans. It is speculated that they are a type of magical beast.

Natural Resources

The bountiful pine forests provide the human residents with ample timber and the Sinclairs carful efforts at conservation of resources (learnt in the often quite barren North Isles) mean that the forests are well preserved. The mountains in the north have mineral rich rivers flowing from them that fertilise the land and make it good for farming and the mountains in the south have an abundance of iron, making the area very important to the Blacksmiths Guild. The Free Whale Sea in the north is also very rich in fish and whales. The abundance of the land and the relative ease in accessing them make it a very favourable place to live.

History

It was called the Sinclair Peninsula after the Ancient Sinclair Clan that lived there over 100,000 years ago and although they are long since extinct the name stuck. Over the next few deca-millennia the peninsula was home to many small clans until the Ross finally conquered the whole area in 16,679 BTK. Out of fear of North Isles raiders almost no one lived by the coast.

Very little of note happened on the peninsula for thousands of years until the Sinclair clan’s second great exodus. In summer 1141 BTK the main host of the Sinclair clan landed on the shores and began settling. Due to the low population in the area they went months without being noticed. When they were noticed in early autumn the Ross clan quickly rallied an army to repel what they thought to be a massive North Isle invasion, hoping to drive them back into the sea before winter set in. The Sinclairs beat the Ross and the first Sinclair-Ross war began. Over the next two year the Sinclairs fought the ill prepared and arrogant Ross clan until they claimed the entire peninsula and founded the Sinclair Kingdom. The North Isles stopped raiding as they knew well the power of the Sinclairs and most contact is trade.

After the Sinclair Kingdom was toppled by an alliance of clans led by the Ross in 827 BTK, the Sinclairs fell back to the gap between the two mountain ranges and built a series of forts to defend the peninsula. The border of the peninsula became the front of many small wars between the Sinclairs and the Ross until the last Sinclair-Ross war where the Ross were finally conquered and disbanded as a clan. The peninsula then went back to being rather quiet.
