Marshal of the Grieving Warriors.

The leader of the Grieving Warriors, elected by the rest of the Warriors based on merit and experience. The post lasts for as long the Marshal is considered capable both by himself and by his Warriors. It is one of the most high ranked positions in the Sinclair Clan and in war time can be equal to the Chieftain. Although the post can be held by either sex it is usually held by men since it is also a diplomatic position and foreign diplomats will often react better to men.

Qualifications

The Grieving Warriors will choose from among their number someone who they consider to best hold to their values, a good fighter with experience in life and leadership. If the clan or the Warriors are put in a situation that the current Marshal is not qualified for, he may appoint a temporary replacement or resign and let someone more suitable be elected.

Appointment

When a Marshal is chosen in peace time there is often an elaborate ceremony involving numerous oaths and pledges ending with the previous Marshal giving his successor a shield followed by a festival/party. In more desperate times this will all be ignored and the new Marshal will swear a simple oath to Sinclair in front of a few witnesses.

Duties

The main duty of the Marshal is to ensure the Grieving Warriors are loyal to the Sinclair clan and are trained to fight for them. They are also their leader in battle with the duties that carries.

Responsibilities

The Marshal will oversee the training of his men to make sure they are ready for war. When a young man or woman feels ready to accept the responsibilities of the Grieving Warriors, the Marshal will aid the youth’s parents in testing them and helping them find their place. Keeping abreast of the affairs of the clan is also part of the Marshal’s duties as he is an elder serving closely with the Chieftain.

Benefits

To be chosen as Marshal means that one is considered to be the best representative of Sinclair honour, with fame in the clan being a natural result. It also brings a place in the clan leadership and international recognition.

Accoutrements & Equipment

The Marshal is provided with a house in the main Grieving Warrior compound for them and their family. He is also provided with a suit of ceremonial armour and a shield to wear for formal occasions. His personal stipend from the clan is also a little more than other Warriors.

Grounds for Removal/Dismissal

Very few Marshals have ever been removed from the post, with most having either retired or been killed on duty. The Marshal can only be removed by the Grieving Warriors and not by the Chieftain or any number of the clan elders. To be removed one must commit some manner of great crime or dishonourable act, bringing shame not just on himself but also on the Grieving Warriors and the Sinclair clan. Repeated failures for the same reason, such as underestimating the enemy, can lead to dismissal in favour of someone more qualified.

Cultural Significance

It is a very famous and honourable position in the Sinclair clan and the presence of the Marshal is a moral boost for the Sinclairs in any battle they may be in.
